Dunk, have you seen this? It's absolutely hilarious! Neil deGrasse Tyson has something to say about James Cameron getting the sky wrong in Titanic. Oh my gosh, this is ridiculously entertaining- Neil is such a great story teller.
It only goes for 6 mins- just enough time for a quick cuppa. :D

And I was just looking thru Foxtel to set the recording for Cosmos and seems we don't get it the same time as the U.S.:sadeyes:. We have to wait another week- Sunday 16th March it premiers on Nat Geo. And oooh goody, it's on the high def. channel too! :D

Carl sagan had created a great space series .
It has now been remade.Like a lot of hollywood movies these days.Get an old successful movie/formula and remake it again.
Carl sagan died too young.

I hope everyone gets to see at least some of the series. It's conceived and designed to affect the viewer not only intellectually, but emotionally. And at its best, will reinvigorate the sense of wonder in us all.

I won't be seeing it at first because I don't have foxtel.Hopefully I will get to see it later.
Perhaps someone with foxtel can record it and make it available to some of us.
As always, keep looking up at the night sky and realise that we are all made of star stuff. We are the children of the Universe. Our atoms came from supernova explosions and nebulae of dust and gas.
The spirit of Carl Sagan has been revisited. His memory and legacy has been brought up again.

Hi

Heard about this a few weeks ago and setup Mythtv to record anything with "cosmos" in the title. The show appeared in the TV listings yesterday and Myth found it and recording is set.

I thought it was very good - terrific graphical illustrations and computer animations. I thought they dwelt a bit long with the Giordano Bruno animated story, and I was irked when they flew through the asteroid belt and Kuiper Belt and it looked like something out of a Star Wars chase scene! (Tyson did later clarify that the average Oort Cloud inter-object distance was equivalent to Earth-Saturn, but I bet most viewers missed that and still think that there are some densely packed minor-body fields out there!).

Overall though, great stuff. Looking forward to next week.

so what did u guys think of the first episode of cosmos? It was very different to the version i saw at the sydney opera house. I thought this version was alot better.

I saw the first episode on youtube before it got ripped and my first impression was ok, but the pacing seemed rushed and the music was flat and uninspiring. I've read similar impressions online and someone posted a clip with slowed down footage plus the original Cosmos soundtrack. Much improved, imo, deeper and more thought provoking.

I enjoyed it...probably a few too many scenes where he's standing waving his hands about but even with all the CGI in the world it's still a challenging subject :)

I've only seen the first episode, but will be watching the second and third tonight.. It's pretty good, but so far I prefer "The Wonders of.." series by Brian Cox, and like Tim has said you just can't beat the original!

I found the graphics (spaceship of the imgination?) in the first episode too annoying, and gave up. The original Cosmos had me hooked from start to finish. The various Universe programs on Foxtel are more specialised, and always hook me.

Also, when they showed the asteroid belt as a great big belt of asteroids which one would have a hard time getting through unscathed, well, it was laughable from a supposedly scientific program. Average distance between an asteroid is around 100,000 miles from memory.
Regards,
Renato

I love NDT, but I'm having trouble staying hooked because the cartoons are driving me nuts! :mad2:

I thought the second episode was better & I haven't watched the third yet due to lack of motivation . I will keep at it tho.

Ep 3 was awesome! Who knew Halley was so cool? Waaaaay much better than Ep2 which I really struggled with as a church going Christian. But I'm still watching, overall it's very good reimagining of the Sagan series IMO.

Managed to see some clips on You Tube. It is done very well. Lacks a bit of the poetry of Sagan but NDT does a great job.

Been watching this on Hulu+, it's fantastic. Episodes 2 and 4 in particular I adored: hearing Neil wax lyrical about evolution, gravity and the speed of light is a real treat.

And as others have noted, I was surprised to learn so much about Halley - he was a real awesome guy.

Suzy, you are not the only one - those graphics are BAAAD.

And I really was not impressed by the relativity "explanation"...it really did not explain how Einstein came to his conclusions he did about spacetime at all - perhaps this is too hard for the intended audience - but I found it confusing as presented. No evidence was given for the speed of light being fixed, the resulting predictions and the observations that validated the theory - just a bald statement or two and lots of images of a girl on a motorbike. Pretty but weak imho. Then again I suspect IISers are not the target audience.

Regarding the actual cartoons, I disagree - I'm a big fan of the flat shaded, highly-stylised (irregular and angular geometry and faces) cartoons. Reminds me alot of two fantastic games: Don't Starve and Mark of The Ninja:

http://i.imgur.com/sSGLGgd.jpg

The voiceovers are occasionally a bit on the nose, though!

The actual CGI that is in place for the ship and the various space flybys are OK, if not spectacular. The black hole was probably the most egregiously bad set of effects, though. No reference for the modellers to work with proved too much!

Re: The Evolution Episode.

And I thought it was my Foxtel hard drive playing up.

I'm not sure I believe (I remain confused) what they are saying as this happened in America & I live in Australia. We get the show a week later. In this episode, there was a chunk missing- it was apparent the way it froze and skipped. Luckily we didn't have to deal with waiting as commercials took over, as in the U.S.
Perhaps the editor fell asleep as he was putting that show together :screwy:.

Did anyone notice?
Or was it some crazy co-incidence that the show played up for me too..?!

Congratulations fellow IceInSpacers, Colin Legg & Geoff Sims!
How cool is that and how thrilled you guys must be.

Episode 9 had three of Colin's gorgeous timelapses including the "Ring of Fire" annular eclipse from Colin and Geoff. All shown within 10mins towards the end.

I found them glitzy, bling, and of little substance. Quite disappointed. I guess totally geared to the American spoon feed market.

Sagan's left me with a profound fascination and a sense of wonderment and yearn for more. de Grasse Tysons left me wanting something else to watch.

A bit like movie remakes perhaps. For all the CGI and effects of the recent versions, I still prefer the Charlton Heston Planet of the Apes

I found some episodes riveting, especially "the clean Room" about lead in the environment, that was amazing! - Some were a bit mish mash, but I could usually find enough cool stuff to show my kids that got them exited about Daddy's photographs, so that was ok :)

Just watched all the DVD movies. I also have the originals and saw the original TV series and was totally inspired by Carl Sagan. About the only thing I liked in the new series was opening animation when the "ship of the imagination" goes into the SN remnant and out comes "Cosmos" but done in a banner so that the first and last letters come first CS Carl Sagan, nice reference.

The rest of it ..... em Good for someone who hasn't seen the old version. But for someone who was hoping that they would take it further it was rather under whelming.

I rather gather from the commentaries that it was fairly low budget so they were constrained with the CG stuff. I did like the cartoons, they were very stylish and got the story across well.

Hopefully it will do well enough for a second series and it will get better as it goes along.

I personally really, really enjoyed it. The first episode had me in tears I was so emotionally blown away. I got through the entire season in under two days, I was wrapped! But hey, each to their own I guess :)

I'm one of those people who gets really wrapped in the special effects because I can almost imagine myself coasting through the cosmos :D That's why I always get so excited about the planetarium shows because I feel like I could be floating amidst the stars.

Maybe that's my inner child at heart crying out for attention!

LewisM
06-08-2014, 06:41 PM
Coasting through the cosmos???? I must have missed all that... 99% of the time was on Earth, and all about environmentalism.

Not that I disagree, but it was NOT what I was expecting - he needed tomhit the ground running with a mix of Earth and of the solar system and the cosmos. We didn't get it IMHO.

shelltree
06-08-2014, 07:47 PM
Key word - "imagine"

There wasn't as much as I would have liked but if I'd had it my way, ALL the episodes would have been coasting through space :P what they did show was breathtaking though and the comment was more generalised to special effects in general. I'm a sucker for it when it comes to surfing through the Cosmos :D

Gee whiz and I thought the first episode was the worst one out of the whole lot of them  .
I wanted to cry alright. From boredom :P:lol:.
Sorry Shell- couldn't resist .

Our fellow forum member Colin Legg had his timelapses shown towards the last 10 mins in episode 9.
And also our Alex Cherney a few eps after that (I think ep.12?).
What a tremendous honour hey.
