I took this one back around the New Years period but had some slight difficulty in processing it. Just finished it off.

TEC180 fluorite, SX Trius 694, PMX.

I just added 200 minutes of CDK17 luminance to the image. Its brought out more fine detail in the galaxy centre area. Same links.

Superb Greg!

Very pleasing to look at, what was the processing difficulty ?

Cheers,

Nicely done Greg and very smooth. I really like the small galaxy that seems to be falling into the middle of the larger one.

In the early versions I did the stretching made the stars go whack and also the galaxy halo showed better but too much at the expense of detail and colour.

Cheers Ray. I have some CDK data for this as well. I should do a combined image and build it up with even more detail. Some of the CDK data was taken on some nights of good seeing and the downloads were very impressive.

Thanks Rick. I plan to combine data from a couple of scopes to get more out of it as well.

Another beautiful galaxy photo Greg.

You're building up a nice collection.....time for a book!

Thanks Glen. I am enjoying this round of imaging galaxies. I have a few to process I have taken. Plus some LMC nebulas that are very nice as well.

Thanks Ross. I have been thinking the same thing. Posting on a website is good but ulimately all these images we take need a more permanent
storage. There's so much work that's gone into making these.

Great image Greg! I really like this one.

Nice depth and fine detail in the galaxy. Well done!

Thanks Rod. It was good to have a break at processing this one and come back to it. The original version was not so good.

This galaxy has a striking structure, great background fuzzies.

Great image Greg, colour looks good and there's some really good detail showing there too

Funny this is another galaxy, along with the Meat Hook, that I've not felt the urge to image, something about both galaxies doesn't grab me..? It's my problem, not the galaxies I think :nerd:

Thanks very much Clive. Colour is a tricky area and one I have worked on to try to get right.

Thanks John. It is quite an interesting one.

I quite like this one but certainly some objects are more photogenic than others and that will be different for different people.

Thanks Louie. I found extra data for this one I am in the process of adding to it. Its another 8 hours worth plus I got some Tak BRC data which is another 4 or 5 hours as well.

Thanks Louie. I am working on it. There's some nice luminance there.

Thanks Roger. Completely dark skies and often good seeing helps a lot.

Really nice image Greg. It looks like that spiral arm is being pulled up by the companion galaxy, very cool.

Thanks Rolf. It is a good example of a distorted spiral.

I've added 200 minutes of CDK17 luminance data with a Proline 16803 to the image.

Its brought out more fine detail in the galaxy central area. Same links

Thanks Mike. I caught some good seeing on several nights at home with the CDK. Unfortunately it was before I put in a new primary mirror baffle and there was a reflection arc below the galaxy. So it was handy to have redone it with the TEC at my dark site.

Hi Greg,
That's a great result on a tough target.
The CDK17 has allowed you to zoom right in.
I'd be tempted to do a 3 x drizzle stack to try & get some more out of the data.

Thanks Allan. Is there a link to a reference on how to do that? Its something to do with upscaling and stacking isn't it?

Thanks Rolf. That is very true. More is always better.

Thanks Lucas. I think I'll be doing combo images like this from time to time.

Greg,
Yes exactly that.
It's available in Deep Sky Stacker.
I normally use it on little galaxies & paste them back into the main image.
You can normally get a little more out of the data.

The data appears to have improved an already excellent image. Would love some clear skies - can you send some up to Brisbane?

I tweaked the colour on this one using the Lab colour tehcnique. It brought up the blue spiral arms a lot more.

Looking better now Greg,
you'll be able to have some fun with LAB colour -
what it does is amazing - but it's easy to overdo as well.

Thanks Allan. Yes it looks to be a good tool. Increasing colour without boosting the noise is a great tool. There are several other methods R Jay went over and I found they are listed in the book Lessons from the Masters edited by Rob Gendler. He went over these at AAIC but I didn't take notes.

Gotta be happy with that one. Very clear details in the dust lanes. I thought a little on the blue side at first but I like the saturation you've got.

gregbradley
24-02-2014, 11:57 AM
I thought the same at first but I think this is a fairly blue looking galaxy.
The blue is not something I pushed for but it did seem to boost more than the other colours. Perhap it is a tad strong and needs a little tweak there.

Hi Greg,
I'm sure there are lots of clever ways to get even more from any data -
extract the last drop out of it.

We are always looking for ways to improve our images and definitely over the years there have been as many advancements in image processing as there have been in the cameras etc.

At the end of the day though long enough exposure, good tracking, dark skies are the basics that are never replaced and are the foundations of a good image and anything that stengthens them is a good advance.
