I'm gunna be daft as ask what are the filters used for? Do they take certain types of light away or add colour?

Are they 1.25"?

Yes there 1.25"
The orange is most often used for Mars to make the surface markings stand out .
Green is sometimes used for the moon to reduce the brightness but I also found green can work well for the sun ( combined with a solar filter of course )
Filters work by filtering out other colours .
