UWS 25th Anniversary Public Talk "The Accelerating Universe" - Campbelltown Campus

Interested in attending the University of Western Sydney 25th Anniversary Public Talk featuring Nobel Laureate fellow Professor Brian Schmidt.

The Accelerating Universe
In 1998 two teams traced back the expansion of the universe over billions of years and discovered that it was accelerating, a startling discovery that suggests that more than 70% of the cosmos is contained in a previously unknown form of matter, called Dark Energy. The 2011 Nobel Laureate for Physics, Brian Schmidt, leader of the High Redshift Supernova Search Team, will describe this discovery and explain how astronomers have used observations to trace our universe's history back more than 13 billion years, leading them to ponder the ultimate fate of the cosmos.

In addition to the talk there will also be an exhibition of stunning astronomical photographs by members of the Macarthur Astronomical Society and a viewing of the night sky through telescopes provided by the Society. The event is organised by the University of Western Sydney, Campbelltown Rotary Observatory and the Macarthur Astronomical Society (MAS).

I urge anyone living in the greater Sydney area and interested in high-level astronomy to come along and witness this talk. It isn't often that a luminary such as Prof. Schmidt makes themselves available to the general public. We plan to allow time after the talk for questions as we mingle through our "magnitude III" exhibition which follows. We look forward to seeing as many IceInSpacer's turn up as we can.

This event was one you'd pay good money to go and see elsewhere - it was modified version of his Nobel presentation. Never mind, 360 people thought that the day was a complete success. :)

We now host a NASA astronaut in June, and really hope that people here on IIS might take an interest and support active societies.
