8 months ago when I heard about the new truss that GSO were going to be making for their 12" scopes I put in an order for just the truss minus the mirrors. I know I have pretty good optics so I just wanted the truss. Well today after a fairly long wait the truss arrived.

Now just from an immediate inspection this is a huge step up from previous GSO tubes. The rear and front assemblies look awesome, the truss blocks are really nicely made and fit together superbly. The carbon truss tubes are really nice to look at and well finished. This is going to be a quantum leap for GSO in terms of finish and market share.

So now to pull the optics out of the old tube and put these in to the new tube. This might take a while as we are getting detailed instructions from GSO as to what is the best way around doing this.

For now here are some images of the truss in detail.

Hey Paul,

I have a few questions. In the third image, is the bit sticking out threaded? Is the focuser part of the main mirror cell or is it independent for collimation?

Yes the bit sticking out is threaded. It looks like it is part of the mirror cell. I am uncertain how the baffle will be connected. The rear is threaded on the outside (the shiny bit). It will not be independent. Rear collimation is done via the collimation bolts 60 degrees from the fans but further out. Rear collimation is rarely used, but necessary for RC's. Front collimation is the same as any cassegrain.

Paul,

Thank you for that. I couldn't tell from the photos.

I does look the part, have fun with the new toy. Enjoy the back focus. :)

Yes I already have the RC12 which had good back focus but wanted this for cooling and stability. The RC12 metal tube needed lots of focusing. I am hoping the scope has the same back focus but suspect this is not the case.
