View Full Version here: : Horse head data repro with 8 hours of Lum

After a conversation with Martin Pugh I decided to undertake a reprocess of the data and include the Lum with a more thorough blending. I went back to the base calibrated sets and started from there.

Some deconvolution applied, and several sharpening runs to the Ha and Lum and I came up with an image I think looks sharper

I also worked on the colour more as I thought the previous version looked a little odd and a bit green.

I also think the curtain now looks more prominent than it did before.

I have included both the before and after shots to illustrate the point.

I liked the dust swirls at the bottom of the image, very nice!

Really nice shot Paul.

I agree as this is something I was going to suggest with your last version :)

Was a very impressive shot of the HH region, and now even more so .

Well done!

Thats top work Paul. I like the detail IN the horse and the cloud detail in whole dark area it, not oft seen. Excellent.

There is certainly a big difference. Even the stars seem tamed. Well done

Very nice Paul. Better colour and tighter looking. The "cave" area to the left of the HH is my usual test for this area and its looking very nice. There are tinges of red nebula strands in there that make it a fascinating part of the HH scene. Also the Flame Nebula has come out particularly nice.

Its strange isn't it that hardly any other nebs are yellow like that. I wonder why its yellow?

Greg.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate you taking the time to write something down for an image you have already seen once.

Fred, I noted with a version that Martin presented to me that the HH was really sharp and had detail I did not have. This and the curtain detail prompted me to go back and take another look. Always good to take a look over good data.

Greg, I don't know why it is yellow but suspect it might be the composition of the cloud that is causing the colour. Even the type of star hidden within it could be contributing to the colour. Maybe someone with an understand could chime in here and fill us in.

Hi Paul,
that looks great to me - it's so deep -
showing brown dusty areas under the horse head.
I don't think you can go any further with this image -
you extracted the last drop out of it.
Well done.

cheers

No worries Paul.
Did you end up having a look at Fitswork4?

I have fitswork somewhere around, but not used that recently.

Fair enough Paul,
I have to use Fitswork4 for every image I process
because it's the only way I can background flatten images
& it has so many other wonderful features.

cheers

Really nice now. CUt down significantly on the tremendously over-powering glare from Alnitak.

That's a first class image Paul! You've been Pugh'd!

The fine, wispy details are now visible.

That's a really first class image now, Paul. It was pretty good before but the repro is better!

Just caught up with this, Paul. Big improvement. It's amazing what difference processing can make. I reckon it's 90% of the deal. In this case it looks like a different photo. Different colour balance, more saturation, significantly more stars etc. You can also see clearly in the 2nd that Alnitak is a double - -a lot less obvious in the first. Great job.

Yes - the new pic gave me a good idea about Alnitak.
I re-processed my mosaic of Orion with some 1x1 & 2x2
subframes taken at much shorter exposure layered in & sure enough
the second star came out.
There was a bonus in that NGC 2023 finally appeared correctly.
It's only small data & noisy compared to Paul's but it's on my flickr photos.
Paul has done well.

cheers

Thanks guys.

Yes this is a bit of an accident as I did not do any control over Alnitak's brightness, but the blending of the data did present a less over whelming view of the star and its halo.

I thought that I had commented on this image Paul but looks like i didnt. I really like the reproduction or second image except that I think the blue areas below and to the left of the horse are more appealing to me in the first iteration.
The flame area is better in the second while the red area above and to the left of the flame looks better in the first as the wisps of blue gas appear better defined while in the second is an uninteresting red blob. They just seem to have a bit more depth and interest.
Great shot anyhow and better than anything I've done.

Hmmm perhaps some masking in of the various areas needs to be done. I can see where you are coming from here. Thanks for taking the time to comment. :)

Might be a repro Paul, but what an impressive repro  Much more Vibrant, more details in overall, tho yeah, i agree with allan on the red neb at left but generally a massive & impressive improvement

Thanks guys.

It goes to show Bob, sometimes it is worth just looking over the data again.
