105 Year Old negative

Hi All

I have come into possession of a 105 year old glass plate negative, with the chance of getting a couple more. :eyepop:

The negative measuses 5 inches by 7 inches, (now thats a big neg), and is in near perfect condition.
I have been asked to make some prints from the neg in my darkroom tomorrow, and looking foward to it. :D

I just wonder if a C D was lying around for 105 years with some images on it,and then found would it be possible to retrieve prints from that C D, probably not, there probably wouldn't be a computer around to read the format.
This neg will survive another 100 years if looked after, but could a C D.
A good debating point Film verses Digital. :)

That is amazing Leon. They have survived well. I see your point about CD v's Photographic neg. Dunno if CD will be readable in 100 years, but will processing chemicals and photo paper be availavble in another 100 years? :shrug:

Well Ken that is correct, the chemicals may not be around, but we can scan any old neg and turn them into digital images. ;)

Leon, that glass plate neg will probably IMHO outlast most CD's. You can still get film sheets for 10"x8" cameras (and probably larger).

Could do with a bit of sharpening. Turn them into trotters. Nice find and thanks for sharing.

Digital information is only as good as the media that holds it. Your digital genetic infomation has been held for about 5G years, otherwise we would be lusting after bananas.

A seed drill ?...they can still be found rusting away in the
bush .. a lot of people were starting to use motor driven
machines to pull them through the soil back then but .. the horse was still much in use till the late 30's .. and the way fuel prices are going .. might make a comeback yet;)

you are just working from a hand held image of the neg with some light shinning through it, while Alice held it, however good work mate... :thumbsup:

Was discussing with a friend at work about the digital medium. People are relying so much these days on storing information digitally, but what happens in 10 years when the format changes, and those old CD's and DVD's aren't readable anymore?

You'll have to continually convert your backups to the newer medium.

Like 10-15 years ago and companies stored important information on tape reels, now you can't get tape reel readers anymore so the information is useless.

Sometimes I think we're asking for trouble! As the technology improves, no doubt the type of media and the way we write to it will change. It's already increasingly difficult to get 3.5" and 5.25" disks and drives now. USB2 format isn't going to be around forever, and they can't continually make it backwards compatible i'm sure.

Interesting times ahead.

Hey Leon, I love old photo's and such like this. A great glimpse into a life so different, but really not so long ago. Look forward to more of the same.

As for the future, whatever, we'll probably cope. We usually do. I bought a CD walkman 3 years ago and already feel like a dinosaur listening to it on the train surrounded by all the MP3 players, but what the hey:D

Well.... some time ago I obtained the film scanner on ebay (Plustek 7200) with 7200 dpi resolution. The actual performance is around 3600dpi...
But this is still over 30Mpixels effective, for 24x36mm negative (or slide).
So, I have ~30Mpixels, for 200Euros (plus my old Practica VLC with Zeiss lens).
I think we will have to wait a while for digital cameras with such price/performance ratio :-)

Hi Guys, and thanks for the comments, and yes janette, they are precious.
I put the neg through the darkroom today and it printed as if it was only taken yesterday, to think you can just imortalise history through a bath of developer and fix.
Well i'm lucky enough to be able to do some more of different sceanes, and once done i will show you all the end result.
When printed on gloossy paper they stand out even more.

PS: it has been established that the photo was taken very late 1899 to early 1901 or 1902 buy tracing the family back to the property they then owned.
