Canberra, prepare for rain!

After many months of research and selling nearly everything that is near and dear to me, I finally drove to Sydney today to pick up a shiny new GSO RC12 inch Truss telescope. Let the steep learning curve begin! Thanks to Logan (Logieberra) for coming to help and take some unboxing/installation pics.

NOW you have a real observatory Baz

Very cool and your commissioning looks to be a little simpler and quicker than Davies & Haese et al

Now thats an Observatory, well done Baz, great to see a GSO RC Truss too, although it looks small in your hands, the scope looks quite big sitting on top of the mount. Nice work.... What are the views like then?

Ta blokes. For a scope I was not expecting to be ideal visually, I was mightily surprised when I viewed our crescent moon through it with a 28 and a 10mm eyepiece. Uncooled, the edges were swimming a little, but the detail in the ridges and cracks is astounding. It will be a while before I am imaging again, lots to work out, but I am a very happy Baz.

Congrats! We do need some rain, so please feel free to buy more things :)

I am awaiting return of my mount from Tasco, so not observing for me for the past 4 months.

I saw these on special at Opt but the local price is better.

Incredible bang for your buck. No wonder RCOS went out of business. How could they offer a 12.5 RCOS for $30,000 when this is nearly 1/10th of that but not 1/10th the quality?

Are you going to replace the focuser or do you think it will be good enough? I usually read the focusers are replaced with Feathertouch or Moonlite.

I am tempted to get one for my dark site but then I need to restrain myself, hehehe.

Greg.

Cheers guys.

Greg, I will be getting a feathertouch soon, but TBH it's only preempting bigger imaging gear at a later date. The stock focuser is pretty chunky, solid and smooth and will carry my current gear no probs. Of course, I've never sampled a feathertouch.

He isn't going robotic or remote either Mikey. Pretty simple when you are just lookin instead of the complexity of remote.

Eyepiece hey? hmmm might have to give one of them a go one day...

Glad to hear it looks good through it, how was collimation etc.. straight out of box?

I have a feather touch with motor and to suit this size scope for cheaper than buying new. It even comes with the right flange.

Was told that my truss is in the shop waiting for shipping. I will get that shipped this week I think.

Congratulations Baz

That looks like it was always meant to be in your Obs.

I'll have to get around and have look some time.

It can rain all it wants to at the moment and I'll be very happy. I've been on quite a few RFS deployments out of area I could do with a rest. Probably another one coming up next week for five days. The whole south east region is a bomb waiting to go off.

Enjoy the scope mate.

Cheers

I'm commissioning and de-commissioning on a nightly basis. I also commission various cameras with the authorized commissioned telescope before commissioning the imaging train on the commissioned pier. That is hard work just saying it but it sounds bloody good and tech. :P

Ooooh nothing ...didn't see a shot of you single handedly manhandling your OTA and plonking it on the mount and start using it, did we? Huh? wimp  Baz and I are of the same metal (http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/134140809/original)

Italian scope...bah, what would we know :P

Yes, not many people are made or Hernianium :D

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't OS mirrors at least made by Astrosib in Novosibirsk, Russia? That makes OS ASSEMBLERS :)

Nice one Baz, hope it all goes well with the new scope and that you achieve all that you are setting out to do.

That looks gorgeous, congrats on your new scope! I like the simplicity - straight out of the box, onto the mount and give it a whirl  Did the same with my 12.5" truss when I had finished building it in the basement. But that's 16kgs all up so not exactly a major feat :P
How much does the GSO weigh?

Hmm, no comment yet from the h0ugh, perhaps he's counting up his pesos..... :P

Nice setup Baz but bound to make the natives restless....

Simple to set up and have a quick look, but still lots to do to align, calibrate and collimate. Steady steady as she goes mate.

Yep it was from Bintel. Michael Chaytor has been looking after me for years. I wouldn't go anywhere else. What sort of details?

Bless ya Brian! Thanks!

Thanks mate. Views of the moon and Jupiter so far are stunning!

Yep, rain would be lovely. Bring on the Canberra winter!

Thanks Marc!

Stars look good. A defocussed star through a 10mm eyepiece looks alright, but looks like it could use a tweak.

Thanks. Not ready for one for a long time. May not even get one.

Less time talking... more time commissioning! ;)

I just got a job in the national parks mate so I'll be joining you on fire duties. Of course you are welcome as always to drop in mate!

Thanks mate.

Thanks mate. Yeah, I hope I can work it all out quickly.

Bless ya!

Me too mate! Can't wait to see what it can do!

Thanks mate. This one's net weight is 25kg.

Natives are lining up mate. Thanks!

I'll keep you all posted. Cheers!

Baz.
