This image of the Carina nebula was taken in the McLaren Vale area after the Tour Down Under Willunga Hill race finished earlier the day. I used my recently modified Canon 350D (Baader ACF2). The 350D camera is now quite an old model and it is not supported by the latest Windows operating systems. This means that I have to use old software to assist me with the focussing of images such as this. For this image I used Astro Photography Tool (APT) version 1.93. This caused me endless problems out under the stars. Most of my images from the same session had noise in the form of thin horisontal lines. I think that it may have something to do with the connection to a laptop via a serial connector for long exposures. This image however came out without the noise (???)

The image was created with 17 subs of 30 seconds each with five darks. I obviously used the modded 350D and a Canon EF-S 55-250mm lens at 250mm, f/5.6 at ISO 800. I tracked with an iOptron SkyTracker on a Meade tripod.

Looks like it came out pretty well but the forum file size limit has made for heaps of compression artifacts. Do you have a link to an off site version?

Good work Theo!

The astrobin image great, nice colour.
May be an older camera, but it still gives a great image!

Cheers,

Justin.
