View Full Version here: : Awesome light show over Adelaide

After a record 5 consecutive days above 42, parts of Adelaide experienced a spectacular light show last night. The first band produced the best lightning I have seen in my area with a lot of of cg lightning, many quite close. Unfortunately, I arrived too late to capture any lightning shots with this band but a second band came not long after. This was the second time I have imaged lightning. The first image is a bit blown out but I made adjustments with the camera settings. As is always the case, many bolts were just outside the FOV.

Incredible shots Dan,
We were quite scared last night. We had one hit the reserve
next to our side fence. We thought it was all over, honestly!
Here is a blend of shot 2 and 3, hope you don't mind, the framing was
perfect for a blend:
Pic 2 as a layer over Pic 1.
Opacity of Layer 2 adjusted to 75%
Layer 1 Brightened.

Wow, that's so cool Steve! Thanks for telling me how to merge images. I assume you could do it for even more strikes? Do you just adjust the opacity for each layer? Or do you combine two images, like what you did, and then have the merged image as a new layer and then merge with the next image? I hope that makes sense!
I was spewing because I rocked up to the beach just before the first band crossed land but I had forgotten the remote shutter cable. I rushed home to get it and then went back to the beach. By then, the cgs were just too close to go out and take images. Luckily, round 2 wasn't too far behind.

I'm very much a beginner at merging like this Dan.
I just posted what seemed to work in the event it was of some use.
I know exactly what you mean about multiple layering.
I merged just one image with another, but I can't see why you couldn't get those two spot on,
merge them then layer that result with
another primary image.
After the merge, saturation seems to be a bit lower, so maybe a saturation boost might help.
As for your images, I adjusted opacity until about 50% simply to align,
then selected lighten, that seemed to make the lower one brighter.
Then I put opacity back up to 75% then merged.
If you look at the merge I did of one of Danielsun's images, that
seemed to need 100% opacity, although that seems to me to
go against my concept of how layers would work:shrug:
Hopefully a layer expert can chime in with a better insight of the whole
process. FWIW I used Paint Shop Pro.

hi Dan,
great lightning photo's, you should be pleased,
just a suggestion, maybe a fisheye lens may help,
regards,
Peter

Was a great night Dan. I might post a couple of images later ( I'm on the ipad). I had the same problem with the first band. I was driving to the beach watching fantastic strikes but got to the beach and setup for the second band. I had the ISO set a bit high so some of my shots blew out. I have got a shot of one of the strike you got, but from the other side. I was at largs and it looks like you were on the cliff top at Christies?
Nice shots! We have not had a show like this for a long while.

Here are a couple of shots I took on the same night.. I think I may have got some of the strike from the other side of them... Pretty cool really

A bit belated but I have been on-call so busy, busy, busy.
It certainly was Andrew. It produced a better show than the Dec 7th storm a few years ago, at least for my area.
Thanks. Loads of cgs that I missed though :(
Yeah, maybe a fish eye lens but not worth upgrading given we don't have many storms.
Yep, cliff tops at Christies. Great spot up there. Most cells either cross the coast towards Hallett Cove or further south towards Aldinga.
Nice shots there Mardy.
Thanks all. I will never forget it. I have to thank my wife for coming home early so I could finish the babysitting duties lol
