This (http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=82761)is pretty cool. I find it just amazing that microscopic creatures create similar familiar shapes as galaxy size structures.

The plankton don't. You'd get the same pattern dumping a shipload of food dye, or iron filings in the water.

The pattern is a result of the motion of water driven by wind and thermal gradients. In other words, maritime weather.
