First Light imaging attempt

Hi all,

I yesterday picked up a 8" Newt at F4 and was eager to have a crack at something to see how it performed vs my ED80.
Processing in PS after a stack in DSS was only done very quickly as my kids are driving me mad!

The OTA needs collimating, i have ordered my collimator so hopefully i get it tomorrow, at it also needs a Coma corrector. I plan to purchase the Baader MPCC as soon as time and funds allow :)
It may be slightly out of focus also, i needed to order a spacer as the DLSR at prime and focuser all the way back still needs a bit more room.

Image was taken on Heq5Pro mount unguided, 10 x 60second exposures with 10 darks on a Cannon 450D unmodified @ ISO800. Only 10 minutes of data! :eyepop:

Nice image. And as Kevin says it doesn't look to bad. But yes you do need a coma corrector:).

The F4 really sucks in those photons. There's a lot of data for 10min's.

I also like how you have framed it.

I'm gonna say it's pretty darn good, good colours and depth. Only comment is that the core stars are burnt out but that is fixable with more frames later on.

Thats the power of an F4.
Id suggest a cheshire collimator rather than a laser.
Also get the mpcc mark 3 as it has an m48 opening rather than a t2

Thanks kevin. Only stacked in DSS and a quick stretch just to see how it compares so i'm fairly happy with the result so far.



Thanks John. I wanted something faster than my ED80 and it looks to be doing the trick. I was actually a little bit surprised by the amount of data I could capture so quickly.

I took several subs at 5 secs, maybe I should have gone a little longer, but when the family goes to bed I might have a go at a composite image.
I'll post it if I can make it look half decent.

Thanks Alistair. I already ordered the laser, although I may get the cheshire soon enough anyway, they are pretty affordable.
Is m48 the one that screws directly to the t-ring? Is that the benefit of the mark3? I'm still new at this and getting up to speed with all these things…

I'd be pretty happy with that as a first light! Congrats! Now comes the bad part where all your money goes away investing in everything else apart from a telescope :P

Thanks guys, but I hope i haven't confused anyone. This is my first image with the new scope, not my first ever. I did only start imaging about three months ago, so it is still all a leaning process. Like you you say, it is a huge investment.
