Hi All,
It is interesting to see that other forums have difficulty dealing with this debate.
This is a very interesting article about how the reddit science forum dealt with the vitriol that generally accompanies the debate about climate change.

Good idea but I can't understand why this debate is such an issue. Disregarding the Science completely, (ludicrous I know), logic, common sense and good manners alone suggest its not a good idea to screw around with the systems that keep us alive...

As the article suggests, the climate "debate" is only an example of the general attack on mainstream science which is either ideologically based, or in the more general case, about cranks hijacking mainstream sites by promoting their own ideas which are invariably bereft of any science.
It's not only climate change, vaccines or evolution that are popular targets.
Whenever a site such as Phys.Org publishes an article on say Cosmology or Astrophysics in general, the comments section is systematically taken over by ideologists and cranks.
The Reddit Science decision to close down the forum is not original, earlier in the year "Popular Science" did the same.
Popular Science closed down their comments section on the belief that many readers form opinions or "learn" from the comments rather than from the articles themselves.
Regards
Steven
