The great orion nebula

Well it is a great nebula and its in orion :lol:! This has been my labour of love for the past few months, I have managed to aquire 24 hours of data that I will be continually adding too over the coming months. This is 8 nights of data, and probably 12 nights of setup :mad2:.

I plan to finish with as much HA as I can, and as much colour as I can fit into new moon nights.

I found this in a wide field image of orion and thought that it would look cool as a stand alone image. At the time I hadn't seen any images of it, and I had no idea what it was cataloged as. I eventually found a number LDN1622. It is very faint, noise is still apparent in 18 hours of HA subs. Dvj posted in his horse head image that he might be imaging this with his AP RHA and I look forward to what that presents like.

Wow, that was my next target with the RHA. Well done! This is a very faint object.

I saw your post in the horse head thread thismorning and thought I should post my effort :) . I look forward to seeing it with the RHA, im sure you will get rid of the noise before my puny scope will.

Congrats on your persistence, Peter, and a nice result. Look forward to the end result. I have this on my list of targets in Astroplanner as the "Boogey Man" nebula :)

Yes, John refered to it as the "goblin nebula" in the other thread, but I had seen it as the "boogey man" too.



I am exclusively using my 6 inch f5 newt for imaging now. Just trying to get SGP working with all my gear.

I imaged this a while ago in a 4 panel Orion Mosaic. Its down below M78 right?

I liked the look of it back then. A good choice of target. It didn't seem that dim in the FSQ106 shot at the time but thats F5.

Yes I have seen the same region in your shot, it is on the other side from barnards loop from m78. My shot is at f5 too but I assume you used a stl11000m for that mosaic? My image scale is 1.47 arc seconds per pixel compaired with 3.5 with the STL. :)

Intrigued by the lack of M42 in the preview image and glad I clicked as I love these less imaged objects and it has come out well, the shape is very detailed with good contrast.

Hehe, Im sneaky like that. I hope to create more contrast in the final version, but the more I stretch out of it the more noise appears!

I agree, I especially like the small brown reflections coming off the bright star at the center of the cloud, something I really hope to capture with some colour data!

Great object and well composed frame, Peter. Looks like an eagle to me with outstretched wings. How about the "dark eagle"? ...or "the not so great Orion nebula"? Looking forward to the colour version.
