Hello everyone, after having had it a long time in my to-do list I was eventually able to collect the data (and process them :)) of the area around NGC1999, a fantastic area situated below the belt of Orion. The proximity of several popular targets in one of the richest constellations of the sky often makes this tiny nebula overlooked, I hope with this attempt to do some justice to it :)

NGC1999 Full field (http://www.glitteringlights.com/Images/Nebulae/i-Rnv7k22/A)

NGC1999 Crop (http://www.glitteringlights.com/Images/Nebulae/i-SR6rbZC/A)

The total exposure lasted almost 18 hours through 5 filters (HaLRGB). Interesting is the contrast between the yellow/brown dusts and red and blue gases, an explosion of colors in a rather small area. At the center of the image, the small NGC1999 looks like a dark keyhole for a mysterious cosmic key :) Highly recommended the full resolution versions! I am also interested in your opinion of which of the two views is the most interesting to keep.

I hope you will like the image(s) and that these could be an incentive for someone with a longer FL to shooting it.

Superb shot Marco. This is a real cool area in orion, not unlike Rho Ophiuchus. Comes real nice in 200mm widefields but you need dark skies. I'd like to have a shot at it from the bush this season if the weather's kind.

Beautiful, Marco. It almost pops out of the screen! Keep the full field version I think.

Lovely image Marco, there is a so much in that field funny how it isn't imaged that much, I guess much of it is quite faint. As for a choice between full frame and crop..? They are both good...I would have had a third option of a crop around NGC 1999..although the resolution looks just a tad soft that close with your system (that's not a criticism just a fact)..so if I had to chose one, perhaps the medium crop you have there is the best as it keeps the distraction of a bit of M42 out of the view...but that's all just thoughts.

Great job

That's a fantastic explosion of colours, Marco! I like the cropped version but both are great.

Hi Marco - you take imaging to another level -
that's magnificent - top data & perfect processing.
I like the larger one as it helps me to identify the area of the sky.

cheers

Hi Marco,

That's simply awesome. So much in there. Amazing processing as well.
Was this from your remote setup at a dark site?
I prefer the larger version as it has sharp features on the right and top and shows the softer features in context and the crop looks a bit soft on its own.

Cheers

Not many bother with this and that tiny centre black hole intrigues me. A mass of colour looks like the aftermath of an explosion and I barely noticed M42 top right.

xSorry for this late reply (just got back from a biz trip) and thank you all for the apprecation!

Yes, it intrigues me too, I wander what you could do with your longer FL telescope ;)

Thanks Alistar, yes the image was taken from Coonabarabran with my remote observatory :)

Thanks Mike. I avoided a smaller crop for the reason you mentioned, even if at full resolution all images show the same detail. What about givin it a try with your killer setup? ;)

I believe at the end will keep only the larger field area, untill I will be able to shoot it with a larger telescope sometime in the (far away) future

Beautiful image Marco :thumbsup: There are certainly lots of little treasures around Orion (and everywhere else!) that are ripe for the picking with a longer FL!

Cheers, Marcus

Lovely work as usual Marco. Love the star softness and colour as if they floating on the red mountain ranges background.

The full res version are really nice and smooth. Great stuff Marco. I really like the colouring too. Spectacular area of the sky. Currently working on collecting data very close to there. Your blending of the Ha is superb.

Fantastic image Marco. You are one of my favorite astrophotographers. Apart from the superb quaility of your images, I really appreciate that you image the lesser known objects. I always look forward to your next project.

Regards,
Tony.

Stunning image! What a good idea to capture that area. It is in the shadow of M42, Horsehead and so on. But wrongly! So many details and beautiful colors, great work!

Simply sublime work Marco, and great choice of target. It is a very interesting and colourful area. Thanks for highlighting these overlooked gems of Orion. If I had to choose I would prefer the crop.

Thanks Marcus!

Thanks David, I too love keeping stars not too sharp to preserve their natural look, happy you like it too

Thanks Paul, happy you appreciate it. Can't wait to see what is in your pipe ;)

Thanks Steve!

Thanks Tony, going out of the path often brings some pleasant results, there is so much out there!

Thanks Werner!

Thanks Rolf, give it a shot with your scope, you have a great setup to bring out some fine details of this area!

Cheers Marco, it's definitely on my list. Might be a bit too late this season because Orion disappears behind some trees to the north here, but next time it comes around I'll be ready :)
