Howdy
Tried imaging the moon with my new 850nm infrared filter, that I got for daytime use. I was pleasantly surprised how well it goes on the moon.
I took three ISO 100 pics RAW file format, stacked in IRIS the finished off in Photoshop with some mild unsharp masking. IR light is apparently not as affected by seeing, so can give sharp images. The filter passes IR light 850nm and longer. Modded 350D camera on 10 inch f5.6 used.

Very nice, Scott.

Contrast is very good and the image is crisp.

Well done

Thanks all.
I got the filter from ebay, a seller in Honk Kong. Theres a good range of filters on ebay here

It's not bad Scott, but it would've been nice if you got the other side of the moon too ......:P :whistle:

Oh man it's the best I've seen mate.

Brilliant - I've had a go with my unmodded 20d - the images always look soft - for full frame shots your result is a stunner...well done!

Thanks all :)
Yes I took the moon pics as an afterthought just before packing up, wondering "what would happen".
Indeed Jupiter looks tempting to try now with the filter :)

Thanks.
I took a new image earlier tonight, this time moon near full.
5x iso 100 shots with the infrared filter. Processed same as first shot.
I uploaded a full res. version here http://www.users.on.net/~josiah/infrared/moon%204xiso100%20ir.jpg

Thats amazing contrast for a near full Moon! Is it my imagination or are the crater rays more pronounced with IR than with visible? Or is it just the DSO processing?

Thanks :)
I just adjusted Levels and did one bit of unsharp masking, nothing too fancy. Perhaps the moon's characteristics do change a bit in infrared light.

Ive reprocessed the 2nd image

Less unsharp masking, better contrast.

Scott, this is amazing. :eyepop: Do you think the IR filter reduces the effects of seeing disturbance and that makes it crisper?

I still like your first image Scott very natural feal...the next 2 look a bit over done to me.

Yes I think IR light is less affected by seeing, as Ive never been able to take a normal colour image of the moon that clear.
