The US are thinking of allowing mobile phones on planes.
What are your thoughts.
I don't think I would appreciate someone sitting no more than 50 centimeters away from me talking on a phone, I found it bad enough hearing a persons over loud walkman for hours.:mad2:
It's bad enough trains and buses.

I find the use of mobile phones in public irritating enough now without having some jerk sitting next to me on a plane shouting into one.

During visits to USA I experienced bus and train rides. Often, and just too often, people talking on phones. Er.. correction, YELLING on phones. These idiots believe that they need to yell. The entire bus or carriage passengers were included as listeners with no effort to hear the idiots.
On public transport ambient noise level is a little higher so the caller speaks louder. Its not necessary. It is annoying to other passengers. A solution would be what the Germans have done. Cut the noise generated in the cabin of the train or bus. People can communicate at whisper levels.
Cheers :)

Maybe not talking, but definitely should allow USE.
Having to turn them off for an hour of each flight is ridiculous!

The FCC may allow it but they're not going to get much of a signal unless the plane gets fitted with an onboard cell. I'm sure the call charges would keep any conversations to a minimum.

If airplanes were built as depicted in the Flinstones with outside seats. They could then allocate seats there for phone users and even smokers. Otherwise mobile phones should be banned on aircraft so they don't annoy other passenger passengers.
If you need a mobile phone to be contacted at any time you should seriously look at how you operate. I gave away mobile communication 40 years ago and don't miss it even though I have a mobile phone that is only turned on for emergency use.

Gday Baz
Its even simpler.
If you want to use a phone on a flight,
you must buy a business class ticket :-).
( And stay in business class regions when using it )
Leave the hoi polloi in peace.

On'yah Barry.....my sentiments also...I have one but only for emergency use.....or if I HAVE TO contact someone.....otherwise I leave it entirely alone....BTW...my monthly Mobile bill has never gone over $21.00 / per month for years and years.

I totally concur Laurie, we just cannot escape them. Frankly, it is irritating to listen to only half a conversation anyway. And, I have observed that a lot of people do seem to shout into their phones, mostly, in my view, because they want other passengers to know how important they are.
I think the ban should remain in place, if not for safety factors, just out of courtesy to other passengers, after all, it isn't like we can just get off the plane if someone annoys us, unlike a train.
I have noticed that most mobile users are not very thoughtful, particularly in restaurants. I mostly put my phone on silent or turn it off, if I am in a meeting or a restaurant.

Gday Togo
You are only free to do what your masters allow.
Betcha you cant take a loaded gun onto a plane over there, even if you claim it is only to shoot all the people who annoy you by talking on their phones:D
I reckon the simplest answer is to make planes in 3 parts with soundproof bulkheads between em.
a) People with phones
b) People with babies ( this should start a new war  )
c) The rest
Andrew
Very funny Andrew,
could even try putting the people with babies in with the people with phones to really show how annoying unwanted endless noise is.
Seriously, separate compartments is a great idea. You got my vote :)

I heard they were throwing around lifting the restriction on use of phones and electronic devices during take off and landing, but this is the first I've heard of lifting the ban on actual calls.
Personally, I think they should be allowed to be used, but we should take a leaf out of Japan's book and ban phone calls on all public transport - send and receive texts, by all means, but no calls. Its just a common courtesy to other passengers.

Hope they don't work long after take off & over the oceans no repeaters.
If they interface with aircraft satcom, they are assigned low priority & it cost a bomb.
A little peace please.:)

Hi Barry,:)
" & it cost a bomb." People who use plane travel have money and wont think twice about making calls. Its a once or twice of (or thrice).
Cost will not stop them.
Cheers:)

Bugger, I used to travel a lot, >10 international pa and that was one of the best things. No contact from boarding, sometimes I even 'boarded early'.
People think work travel is great, but it is just work & everything is more difficult (time zones , family etc you only know if you've been there), over it.

The use of mobiles is banned on all Japanese transport. Period.
Should do it here.

I'd pay extra for a quiet zone on the plane. No phones, no babies, children, drunks, snorers...
Surprised the money grabbing ***** haven't thought of that before

A note on shouting into mobile phones. When I'm in the back yard talking on my mobile phone, my wife often says that I shout into it. I think the reason is some of my friends have not the best reception and or they are drunk, and what I hear is slurred and a bit droppy out like at times.. so I tend to shout to compensate for the reception rather than to impress the neigbours. The silly thing is, I know the phone has AGC, (automatic gain control), and I only need to talk normally, but still I don't. LOL or should that be SOL.
But I do agree that some people do appear to talk loud and boast a bit.
As for planes, if it is important, then fair enough, just don't shout as it can be annoying. Planes don't crash if you use one, (as not everyone is frisked and made to turn off their phones), and they must have some technology to allow the transmission. :juggle:
There was a time not too long ago that planes had a phone in the seat in front of you where now is the touch screen, you had to sipe your credit card and pay a small fortune to use it though.

Ban in all forms of public transport, what did we do before they were invented- Oh dear we may have to talk to each other now wouldn't that be inconvenient ;)

Agree. Here in NL many people (particularly girls between 20 and 35) are screaming into their iPhone on a volume level audible to the whole train cabin which can enjoy her life story.
So I hope when the EU releases a ban on cellphones on aircraft this will not be allowed (or charged steeply, e.g at least a few $ a minute) on aircraft. It is the last resort of silence during transport.
I even don't miss internet during 10+ hour flights, enough offline entertainment such as taking pics of the sky (yes that is possible !) from the aircraft.

Yes, we need more bans. If there is one thing our society lacks it's bans. That way we won't have to teach our kids anything, not even manners.
Cheers

I definitely think ALL mobile phone use should be banned when driving a car.
Driving is a full time occupation requiring complete attention at all times-no distractions, period!

I don't have a problem with using mobiles on flights. I think if someone is talking too loud it is simply a matter of either raising this with the person or contact the steward and let them attend to the problem. Since it is an offence to ignore the directions of flight staff I would say much of the concerns shared here would be a non event once the stewards take control of noisy passengers. Besides who can hear anyone talking on a flight three rows away, most people are talking loudly anyway because of the engine noise. Bring it on I say.
Funny though how mobiles don't seem to interfere with the airplanes electronics afterall despite being told this for years on many, many flights. ;)
