Here's an image from last night (8 Dec) of the moon, taken from Lindfield with the new Vixen 140 NA SS, now with all Japanese optics. No processing; canon 550D.

Nice one John, Vixen 140 yep, good moon image aswell

Processing is a good thing to learn, will help with color fringing, tones, smoothing, sharpening, all types of stuff :cool2:

Good onya .

Thanks Bob

The objective was to compare various scopes. so no processing See attached from tonight...

The Vixens were a 102 ED SS from 2001
The new 140 NA
The antares is a 152mm 900 mm focal length achromat.

Which is best ? second best ?

I welcome your opinions

Pic 2. (having the pics so big makes it harder to use my "Blink-comparator"))

(While I was looking at these pics my wife looked at them and wondered why someone would post 5 near identical pictures ?????
I pointed out that to most people here would hardly notice the moon in the picture, their focus would be the :eek:VERY thin strip of colour on the edge,
"Why waste time on that when the beauty is in the rest of the picture?" was her reply)

Through my 57 year old eyes & 'THICK' glasses and dirty uncalibrated iMac27 screen :

1. Very little colour seen on the limb but image unsharp, camera shake?
2. Green/Yellow fringing and similar cast on image, sharp image compared to 1 & 3
3. Minimal colour and slightly sharper image
4. Blue/violet (wider area than 1) slight cast on image
5. Blue/purple fringe outside limb, green/yellow on limb, cast in the shadows.

John....to my 58 year old eyes ....image seems a ' tad ' out of focus....
and purple/yellow colours on the fringe ......to be expected with a Achromat on such a bright object....try a Fringe Killer or a Semi-APO Filter...that should take care of that.

Without the Petzval design....colour fringing on bright objects would be terrible IMHO
DSO's shouldn't be a problem....wider views and not so colour prone.

Thanks for that.

1& 2 were the Vixen NA 140 SS
3 is the ED 102 SS (660 mm FL ED glass). This really is a great telescope.
4&5 are the Antares 1529 achromat, a fairly good instrument but with a fair bit of false colour. 152 mm OD 900 FL

Images 1 & 2 are very good for the NA140SS...very little colour at all.

:) I like #2 it compares very well to my 127mm Istar f8 Achromat doublet , here is the moon at its 1000mm fl Sony DSLR A200, un-processed as well .
The NA140ss gives a very clean image , thanks for posting .
Brian.

arrh Ok, then Im also Liking #2 seems to show a more accurate WB and better natural look overall John. Im not going to comment on the sharpness as there are variables that can influence the focusing along with sky conditions etc
But yeah, #2 is way in front for said reasons
Hope this is of use . .

Thank you all for helpful comments. I'll try some clusters & fuzzies soon when the moon goes to bed.
Thanks team
