Meet my new kitten - Rigel

Sadly my old cat companion of 15 years passed away in September. He was a beautiful white Tonkinese-Persian cross. He had some features that I admired, like his beautiful blue eyes and cheeky personality, something that I had to have in my next cat.

Because of his eyes I had to name him Rigel in honor of the blue white star in Orion. :P So here he is, my new seal point Tonkinese boy. He's now 4 months old.

Hey he looks like a cheeky little Man... Good on ya. I lost my cat in Feb and tried everything to save him. Even had him on chemo.. in the end his time came.. I have not been able to make the move to get another cat... I guess in time I will give another ball of trouble a good home...

I think he's going to run your house, I can see it in his eyes LOL

It has been 6 years since our last cat, and I still don't want to replace him.

It is good that he is interactive. They give a lot of value from one day to the next, for years and years.

He is absolutely gorgeous. Is he a 'talker'?
We've had a number of Oriental Siamese and they have always been quite chatty and certainly personable critters. From what I've heard the Tonkinese are very similar. And definitely 'velcro' cats, they stick to you, mainly your lap of course.

I think you have to accept that one day you will have to take care of their end but we've always almost immediately gone loking for another cat. Not a 'replacement' as such but 'another' cat. Or in our case a pair of kittens normally, much more fun. We are down to one old (11 years) male now but when he has had his time we will go find another one or two within a month or two for sure. At one stage we had 4.

Shane, go get another cat and enjoy. I'm sure your previous pet would like to see you happy with another companion.

Velcro cat yes, talker no. Apart from a single very soft scratchy meow when I first got him, he hasn't said a word. I even took him to the vet for a visit, which my old cat hated with a passion, and even then through car ride and all he didn't talk, not one word! He goes in next week to be de-sexed so I'll have to ask about that.

Tonks are usually talkative, but not this fella. In a way it's good because he doesn't interrupt my sleep, but I do miss the "good morning" meows, and "feed me" meows of my old cat. Maybe I should have called him "Monk" for his vow of silence.

You could try playing sounds of cats off YouTube to see if that gets him going.

Hoshi (Japanese for 'Star'), my Bengal loves playing fetch.
One day she dropped an old 35mm film canister at my feet and sat there looking up at me. No idea where she found it. I picked it up and threw it and she tore off after it, picked it up in her mouth and brought it back. It was on!

I often throw the canister down a flight of stairs and she tears off after it, then comes screaming back up the stairs at a million miles an hour with heaps of chirps and meows and drops it at my feet.
She also chases after golf balls outside in the large back yard but often gets distracted by all the activity out there. (wind in the trees, birds flying overhead etc.)

Can you imagine if cats had opposable thumbs? And wings... the ultimate in evolution! But then we would all be slaves to them. Oh wait, we already are lol.

Well Rigel seemed lonely on his own so I got him a mate. Meet Orion! Orion is a cream mitted Ragdoll. I've had him for about 2 months now and he and Rigel get along like a house on fire! Must be because Rigel is a star in Orion. :D

Orion has caught up to Rigel in size even though he is only 5 months old, so at the moment play is fairly even, with them taking turns at pouncing on one another. Not sure what happens if Orion grows huge, as Ragdolls can and Rigel stays small. Rigel though is heavy for his size as Tonks are.

Hi Kevin. As another crazy cat man, all I can say is 'solidarity brother' :D Your feline friends are beautiful & I confess to having an enormous soft spot for Tonks. We've had several over many years & have two ATM; a seal point and a choc solid. They are the best of mates (... & distantly related - we've only ever used one Brisbane breeder), ever so intelligent and delightfully playful (and talkative :-) - they're wonderful companions. In fact, they are our 'dogs' & happily follow us all over my 7.5 acres. Do you use a local breeder?

Hi Alex, there are no Tonkinese breeders in Mackay, so I got him from Townsville. There's a couple of ladies there, one is a cat judge and they breed Tonks, Siamese and Orientals. The Ragdoll is from the president of the Mackay cat club.

Both of mine are indoor only as there's a busy road just outside, but they sure get plenty of exercise chasing each other through the house!
