Moon occults Antares 08/07/2006

and EST17:17 RB.

This should be observable through most scopes.

As of EST15:56 Antares is very bright sitting next to the moon.
Am using an 8" newt with 20mm t5 when the FOV permits I'll use
my 14mm XW. Just love the luna views of the 14mm XW cant beat
it IMO.

I just processed this image from just before the occulation (about 16:25 from Brisbane). This is with a 300D + 200mm f2.8 lens @ 3.5. I have enhanced antares using a high contrast layer as it would be too hard to see at this scale.

Yep caught it with the coke bottle ... just kidding ... with Orion Express 80. It was my first occulation. Only saw the de-occultation bit. Nice.

Very nice catch Terry, quite a brightness range there eh! :thumbsup:

My wife and I watched the ingress from the very bottom corner of the garden through the WO 80mm with a 22mm Hyperion and it looked just beautiful. By the time egress was approaching, the Moon was just clearing the tree line from my normal spot at the top of the garden, where the C9.25 was set up, so we then watched the re-appearance – just beautiful.

Believe it or not, this was our first ever stellar occultation (thanks Rob :thumbsup: ) and my wife really enjoyed it, so I am well on the way to getting the DMK now! :whistle: :whistle:

Np's Dennis ;) I was surprised to see how red Antares looked
during daylight, and bright!!

...actually occultations can be quite fun to watch, I love the
way the stars go blip! and they're gone when they hit the dark
limb or blip! and they appear depending which side the dark limb
is on. But my favorite is when they graze the edge so close or
at a slight angle, that you can watch the star pop in and out of
the peeks, which is rather magical on a dark limb area. A good
occultation with a bright star is enough for me to setup my scope.

I spent the day travelling to Grafton... arrived about 3:00pm, then about and hour and a half doing the meet the family thing. Got back to mum's about 5 or 10 minutes before Antares was supposed to disappear, so I grabbed the 20x80s and had a look but I couldn't make out Antares. Not sure if I missed it, or if the noc's just weren't big enough to pick it in daylight... :shrug: never mind!
