First it was Woolies dropping my favorite Helga's Bakehouse rye breads...that thankfully Coles still stock.

Now it seems some bean counter at Continental, has retired my treasured Bacon Stock cubes. ARRRRGGGH! (helps make the *best* salad dressing)

Don't these clowns have taste-buds? :mad2:

As far as I can tell they are now extinct.

No, but they have calculators. It's all about profit, and if it ain't making a profit, then it gets the ol' heave ho!

I understand that, but fear following this sort of madness, you can have anything you like, so long as it tastes like chicken....

I can't wait for the day when all I have to do is grab a tube of breakfast on my way out the door, and another tube for lunch. Much more convenient  And there is no washing up!

That's sad news, I like those bacon cubes. I thought the whole point of a supermarket was providing ultimate variety? If you can't do all your grocery shopping in that one place then the whole idea of the supermarket falls apart.

EDIT It seems Woolworths is not to blame, for a change (as I had assumed). The Continental web site doesn't list the bacon cubes anymore: http://www.continental.com.au/product/category/252728/stock-cubes

Cheers
Steffen.

Products are going 'Extinct' at a great rate of knots. All a push towards exclusive 'home brands'.

I have never come across a commercial product that comes within a country mile of home made stock for flavour and quality. It is perhaps the first thing an aspiring home gourmet chef should learn how to make. There are enough tutorials out their on the interwebs so I wont go in to detail save for one tip worth its weight in gold... once you get your stock base up to boil on the stove top, every 5 to 10 minutes spoon off (chuck out) the frothy stuff that floats on top of the brew... this contains complex proteins that negatively influence the flavour. You should only need to do this for the first hour or two, keeping the water level up so all the solids are covered. Once the meat has fallen off the bone (6 to 8 hours) then you can ditch the bones and let the water level fall through evaporation, eventually ditching all the solids along the way.

10 litres should reduce to about 2 cups of pure carnivore heaven flavour.

I love the new "Riddick" movie where even his pet dog pisses on the dehydrated packaged food and we know dogs generally will east anything :)

Which Aldi?? I was in the Menai store today... no joy.

P.S.

Clive is correct.... I often make "authentic" chicken stock for, Tom Yum (hey I've been frequenting Singapore/Bangkok for too many years....) that you can't replicate in a Powder/Cube/Can/Gamma ray sterilized carton etc. but I often don't have a full day to cook. Bacon cubes were quick, easy, unique. Damm !

Jeez, a bit more care with your thread titles, please. For an awful moment I thought Kevin Bacon had passed away. :(

Oh Peter stop complaining! Just go out and find some other salty, fat laden carcinogen to sprinkle over your healthy salad! :P

 No no no... I don't sprinkle the cubes over a salad.

Some balsamic, virgin olive oil, french mustard, herbs, and f-ing bacon cubes
makes it good (Ref: Simsons/flaming Moe) ;)

Yep! I had an ol' fella once say to me, in my teens, after I found a really easy way to do a particularly hard job; "Yes, give a lazy man a job and he will find the easy way to do it; every single time!" Too bloody right mate!

Actually, I don't have a problem working hard, just don't see the point in working any harder than I absolutely have to. :D

Oh, and as for the washing up, isn't that what a dishwasher is for?

It might not be strictly 'traditional' but I find the milk (and jelly) from a couple of drinking coconuts adds a sublime level of flavour complexity to a hot-sour soup like tom-yum.

Carnes hills, also saw them in Bonnyrigg. Otherwise try the Knor brand. Maggi is best for stock but I am biaised :).
