NGC2014 etal in LMC in Ha

after 6 weeks of useless imaging weather, finally no clouds, some beautiful seeing and winds below 20kts - yahoo.

this started out as quick "suck it and see", but the objects are so beautiful that it got 5.5 hours in the end. There are bubbles everywhere, including the possible isolated SN bubbles and the "bunch of grapes" complex with numerous shock fronts - presumably from a collection of cataclysmic events at the focus and distorted by the radiation and wind from the nearby SN?.

The region is also rich in O3 emission, which I did not record, but there is enough associated Ha to show the general structure. This will be worth a try with LRGB when the moon goes away.

Looks good Ray. I have started this very same patch about 5 times in the past three years. I got some half reasonable data on it a couple of years go but it was not enough. I might devote about 50 hours to it in the next year to capture it the way I have always wanted.

Interestingly I found with 30 minutes subs in Ha it still needed a lot of integration to control the background noise. I think one attempt I had 7 hours of data and it still had that speckled look to the background. A real challenge and I look forward to your completed results.

I have started on this area too, so far I only have 6 weeks worth of exposure but I am hoping for about 3 months if I can, I recon then it will look so real that it will jump out of the page and grab Fred by the gonads :lol:

thanks Paul. I suspect that the speckle is in fact stars - the longer I integrated, the more it resolved into points - it never looked like smoothing out, so I resisted the urge to use a heavy noise filter.

Thanks Rick - sure was frustrating to see the moon free period slip by with no imaging. I would have liked longer subs, but lost the first 15 minute one due to a gust of wind, so I chickened out.
