Now that I got my camera cooled I thought I'd try Orion again and see if I could get it any better, not sure.
Anyway, 120x160 sec subs at Iso 1600, 350D. Lens, Nikon 50mm at f8.
Cheers

Wow! You've got the witch head neb and everything! I think that's the best Orion wide field I've seen.

Thanks Kevin, but I certainly haven't given this area justice, hopefully when I get more experience...

That is a beautiful image. Lots of wispy stuff. Any chance of a link to a fullsize version?

Thanks Justin  Yeah I'm really happy with the camera, it's amazing what faint stuff you can pick up, a few months ago I was pleased to capture a mag 8 globular and now I'm imaging galactic cirrus in the Hyades
Thanks
I didn't put up a large version because I thought it was a pretty poor image  but I'm planing a three panel mosaic of this area with the 85mm lens on new moon which I hope should work out nice so I'll be putting up a big version then.
Cheers
Jo
Nice work Jo. would be interesting to sit down and see how many objects you have captured in this image. Excellent job !
Lovely. You can just make out the Horsehead as a notch in IC434

a link to it in astrobin would be good.
what did you cool it down to?

Thanks Rex, Jon, Rowland, Kosh and Alistair,
I've got the colour sensor in my 350D at the moment as I don't have any RGB or NB filters.
Not sure what the sensor temp was, probably around -10.
cheers

That's really nice.
I find with my 50mm lens that the skyglow washes out all the detail in the nebulosity. I must be doing something wrong. A wider lens helps a bit.
Well done!
Hi Jo, very nice shot! Lots of interesting objects there. Just shows what you can do with a std camera lens and lots of time. How come a Nikon lens on a Canon camera? Obviously it comes to focus OK. Is it just a simple lens adapter. Some like my Minolta-Eos adapter will not focus to infinity.
Cheers, Ross...
thats nice capture... would you please explain your setup? i have Nikon DSLR and i am buying 8" Dob next week. would you please guide me what all i need to capture such images? i red so many places that i need Canon for low such photos as Nikons are bad when it comes to noise reduction?
please help

Hi again Jo, beautiful work, but I am curious as to why you used f/8.
Unless the lens has problems, you could have used f/4 and ISO 400,
or alternatively f/2.8 and ISO 200, or f/4 1600 and 40 sec subs,
or f/2.8 and 20sec subs. Having said all that, you'll probably shoot me
down in flames.
Here's to many more fine images.

I have pretty dark skies that help out a lot
I used the Nikon lens as its the only one I have, it comes to focus perfectly
My set up is: tracking mount, cooled modified dslr, 85mm camera lens.
Your Nikon should be fine, all you need is a tracking mount and some dark skies.
Good question, because I removed the IR/UV filter from the camera and didn't replace it with anything, I would pick up a much larger part of the spectrum than the lens could acutely focus, but by stopping it down to F8 it was able to get a sharper focus.
Thanks!
