So, the US government shut down in response to Obama's buffoonery was all a conspiracy to stop letting the world know about Comet Ison apparently harming (electrically, as he says), Mars.

What I find really disturbing is when I go to youtube and put "ISON" in the search, I find nothing but doomsday and conspiracy videos. Same goes for any asteroid, comet or astronomical event. The ratio of nutters to sane people on youtube seems all out of proportion. Perhaps it's the hit counter that drives the madness. After all everyone wants 10 bazzillion hits to brag about!

The idiot should spend more time collimating his 8" telescope & not use it in bad seeing. :scared3:
It's hard to get a gun license, but any idot can use youtube & a telescope.

I wouldn't even give this trash legitimacy by watching it. The guy is a nutcase, fantasy prone and attention seeking.

See attached YouTube clip....I don't know how accurate this clip is.
If correct and a big IF...the entry and exits of comet ison through earths orbital plane is interesting.

Yes I had 15mins to kill from work......so don't get nasty

Ho Hum!
Most of those shots are how I normally see mars. It needs good seeing to see the "canals" at any time.

Unfortunately this type of nonsense also extends to well known sites such as Phys.org. The comments section for the Astronomy and Astrophysics articles in particular are overrun by cranks typically from the electric universe looney brigade who get free publicity for their moronic ideas. It has led to Popular Science shutting down its comments section due to the constant sabotaging of articles.
The tragedy is that many readers "learn their science" from the comments section which was the main reason for Popular Science closing it down.

I am inclined to disagree....not fun, especially when kids start to believe the BS.
I did a short presentation to around 90 Grade 3's last Friday. When it was finished I opened the floor to questions. Two of the kids asked about the end of the world via planet whatever and Comet Ison.

Hi Stu...maybe you need to teach your pupils how to discriminate between the B.S...well me I have 2 applied science degrees....and I stand by my original comments....this is all fun stuff...have a great day.

That's the problem, Tom, it's not all fun stuff. People hear this crap and believe it, then when you try to correct them with the proper knowledge, they get up on their high horses and get defensive about it. Or, they try and rationalise it and they just don't have the background to do so. It's bad enough with adults falling for rubbish like this but it's the kids you have to worry about.
It's nothing more than snake oil pseudoscience these fools go about sprouting. Yet they pass it off as legitimate science and fool far too many people. They give anything science a bad name and when those that actually know something about it try to explain things, we're the ones that cop the flak from the public, or are just ignored. People want to remember that if it wasn't for those few that understand science, the rest of them would still be living in caves.

Well, at least you've been taught to filter the BS. Most people haven't.
What fields are your degrees in?

Hi Carl..I have a degree in Surveying and a degree in Building Surveying and also a Grad Cert in Fire Engineering.....due to the Surveying Degree in my youth got interested in Astronomy.
Members should be able to make general comments without the WRATH OF KANN coming down on them....might get less submissions.
Cheers Tom

I do understand that some of these cranks can be good for a laugh. Sometimes, during public astronomy nights there can be one or two who try to get you to agree to their version of 'reality'. I suppose it is a good chance to challenge a few myths.
I was only a guest at the school and the subject was restricted to how our Sun, Earth and Moon interact. Just the basics. I am not a Teacher but was asked to assist using some planetarium software. On the whole, I think most of the kids already had a decent BS filter.

There was another video linked on the initial page cited at the beginning of the thread.
A Reverend 'someone or other' talking authoritatively (as they do) about how ISON had swept up a whole host of asteroid material from the asteroid belt as it passed through and it is now trailing all that along with it. And the Earth is going to spend 15 days being bombarded as we plow through the tail of ISON with all this asteroidal matter in mid December.
And something to do with the 'First Horseman of the Apocalypse'.
She is obviously preaching to the converted but, converted to what? Idiots?
Wonder if she would run screaming to her fallout shelter if someone told her there were more than one comet in the skies.

Back to the original ( pathetic ) video , he says C8 without eyepiece , so he is working at 2000mm , then its zoomed in 600x !:help:. no wonder it looks like a BLOB  , I recon he even shot it thru a closed window looking at the bad CA in the zoomed images ,, basic stuff .
I believe the man/woman? is just another one looking for attention , as said .
Does astronomy no favours and should sell the scope to someone who knows how to use it properly and take up gardening or something :) .
