Dusty Hyades

Didn't have any plans of what to image on friday night so when I saw the Hyades rising I thought I'd give them a go. 2.5 minute subs at iso 1600 f8 I found works nice so I got the camera going and went to bed, I had to stop it at 3 o'clock as I wanted to get a pic of lovejoy.

I thought that I was just capturing the Hyades but it looks like I've got biggest mobs of dust as well :question:

The colours looked real bad and I couldn't get them right so I Just did it black and white instead, hope it's OK.

PS I'm quite intrigued by this dust so I'm going to hopefully get another 5 or 6 hours to night and see what else there is :thumbsup:

Sorry should add, taken with my modded cooled 350d and 85mm lens, unguided on my horse shoe mount. The reason I'm imaging at f8 is because I haven't got an IR cut filter yet and I'm getting a fair bit of star bloat, with the filter I hope to drop it back to 5.6 and iso 800.

Nice shot! I'm curious about the dust, was it atmospheric dust or lens dust or what?

Interesting diffraction pattern around your brighter stars, I assume from the leaves of your diaphragm.

I would be curious to see the colour version.

Thanks Ross, from what I can figure the dust is galatic, pretty cool anyway. Yes your right about the diffraction pattern.

That "dust" you're getting on your piccies is known by several names, but it's more commonly known as IFN, or Integrated Flux Nebula. It's also called galactic cirrus. It's the very fine dust in the ISM that makes up large, translucent clouds of the material above and below the plane of the galactic disk. It's present in the disk as well. It's akin to thin, wispy cirrus and altostratus in structure here on Earth. If you go long enough in most pics and/or it's especially concentrated in one area, you can pick it out as a "haze" in your piccies. You can get some good structure in it as well with long exposures.
