Hello,

Here are a few recent insect macros, all taken in our suburban back garden in Brisbane. The small, roly-poly beetle is one of my favourites – it looks quite cuddly.;)

Thanks for looking!:)

Cheers

I had to laugh tho, , after 1st reading about insect cuddling, and then clicked over to the 2nd image, well, I guess one thing always leads to another

As always, fabulous Dennis.

Looks like your flies have been taking notes from the birds and the bees. :)

Thanks guys – I appreciate your comments.:)

I was a little coy about posting #2 but in the end, in the name of science, I just went for it. Much like the top fly….:love:

Thanks Geoff & Mike, I appreciate your comments.:)

@Geoff – I’m not sure what the last insect is in the series, I couldn’t ID it in a search in my usual places.

Thanks Erik, I used the Canon MPE-65 F2.8 macro lens for the ant shots.

It is a specialised “macro only” lens that is manual focus and it operates from 1:1 to 5:1 by sliding the lens barrel forward.

Thanks Dennis, I think heard that name before somewhere. Might look into it. Keep the good pics coming!

The last one is the larval stage of a ladybeetle.

Nice pics.

Superb Dennis. What would you recommend for a Macro besides your 65mm.

Hi Derek

My main macro lens workhorse is the Canon 100mm F2.8 macro lens.

It gives me a reasonable working distance (30 cms) for 1:1 shots.
Fast AF.
Option for a tripod mounting collar on which I have mounted my DIY off-camera flash rig.

Here are a couple of photos of the set up.

A great set of images Dennis! I can see why that beetle image is a favourite.
