I managed to bag the SPOT6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPOT_%28satellite%29) satellite crossing the suns disc quite by accident but how do i extract the frames from the video to make a animated GIF?

Congrats Dave – how exciting!

What camera did you use and what is the video file format?

Cheers

Photoshop can open most video and will show each frame as a layer. You can then use those frames/layers to make a gif in Photoshop too.

oh ok, but a 45 second capture at 15 frames per second is a lot of layers

Can't you use Any video Converter to turn it into a GIF?

Hi Dave

I recently trawled through an 8126 frame AVI (manually) using Virtual Dub and found 20 or so frames of interest and just copied each frame and pasted them into CS6 as a new Layer.:)

In CS6 I then did something like:

Window
Timeline – this opens a strip at the bottom of the screen.
Select “make animation” button in this strip or similar text, can’t remember exact wording.
From the little drop down menu at RHS of the Timeline strip there is an Option to “make frames from Layers.
There are controls to reverse the Frames, set the Delay between frames, etc.
Then you select “File” and “Save for web”. Choose the gif option in the Panel where you can tweak other settings such as Quality, etc.

Going from memory here, so not too sure of the exact wording.:)

Cheers

Dennis

David - if you prepare some aligned jpgs, you can whip up a quick gif at makeagif.com.....

Actually. That video does not give the whole story about creating that animation. Russell Brown kindly gave me a behind the scenes type video tutorial on creating the actual .gif
I could send it to you if you wish. PM me with an e-mail addy if interested.

Its been a long while since I did it, but I'm sure I used registax, Dave.

Something along the lines of:

Open video in Registax.
Select "Show Framelist" and select the frames you want.
Then on the Stack page there was an option to save as a series of photos. (I'm thinking R4 or R5 here - dunno if its still available in R6).
I then opened the series in Photoshop as a stack, and saved as an animated GIF.

That's cool Houghy, I saw SPOTTIE go over there at around the 4 sec mark but then there are two more objects that appear to cross the frame bottom to top at around 15sec and 38sec...birds?...or perhaps a star stream jet?? :D
