Recently did a 1600 km 5 day road trip down around the Nth Island and had an excellent time. Now we're planning to do 2 weeks around parts of the Sth Island in March next year. Take one of the VR4's ( fed up with gutless rentals ) down to Wellington, ferry across to Picton and then drive through to Nelson. There are some boutique breweries to investigate before we take a couple of days to get down to Otago via the west coast. A few days checking out some wineries and a Motorsports park in Cromwell, as well as Arrowtown, Queenstown, etc before making our way up to The Hermitage Hotel just below Mt Aorangi ( Cook) for the night of the 16th, an important date for me, my pension starts !!. :P Following that we spend some time around Tekapo with a planned visit to the Observatory on Mt John and the dark sky area before we wend our way back up to Picton to ferry back over and drive home to Auckland.

Should be one just EPIC trip ! Planning to take the 102m Lunt and a tripod plus the camera gear of course for some widefeilds at least. We'll book accom for just the critical dates and just wing the in between nights where ever we stop. This one should complete our NZ tours, should have seen them all by then almost. Time to start booking and paying ...
Looking forward to this one

Enjoy your trip to the Mainland ;)

Hopefully we can turn on a bit better weather than we've had of late for you.

Sounds great. I'm just planning my next trip now. Was going to be going to Coongie Lakes but it's getting too hot for me. Have a great time and enjoy the wineries. You'll have to come across the ditch one day and see the "north island". That's more like a 16,000km trip!

> David, the 'West Island' do you mean ? LOL We did a bit of a trip about 2 years ago, Sydney to up around the Hunter Valley region. Definitely longer distances and less to see\do between centres we found.
