I saw this today in 3D and all I can say is FANTASTIC. What special effects. A must see.

Oh, man. Was it worth seeing at the cinema?

I saw the preview to it when I went to see Pacific Rim in 3D and it almost made me sick with all the motion. Some irrational fear on my part, but, my heart was beating so fast, haha. I didn't want it to end, but, I couldn't wait for it to end at the same time!

Will suck it up and go and see it.

I will see it this weekend, so far the reviews are so good, most critics agree that it is one of the most beautifully shot science fiction movies in a long, long time.

Got tickets for Sat evening, 3D. Now I'm getting worried, it's supposedly a real 'edge of seat sitter'. Might have to calm my nerves ( before and after !! ) with a wee drop of something medicinal.

I have not seen any movies in 3D yet, but I am tempted by this one. Is the 3D convincing?

Margaret and David both recommended seeing this in 3d.
Can't wait to see it.

Saw it last night. Excellent movie. Beautifully shot. Even sort of slightly plausible (well, in that round about "it might happen if all the things that possibly could go wrong actually did go wrong ... on the same day ... in the same place ... with the same person" kind of way).

I highly recommend it - it's been a long time since I saw a film at the cinema that made me want to tell people to go and see it.

I saw it in 2D, because 3D gives me a headache. Shame, because I think this is a film that really would look spectacular in 3D. It was still bloody good in 2D, though.

Be sure to read this (http://arstechnica.com/science/2013/10/poking-holes-in-the-gravity-trailer-with-nasas-help/) before watching the movie ;)

3D Stu is stunning. It has come such a long way in such a short period of time.

Thanks for the info. It has been a while since my last visit to a cinema. Time to see my first movie in 3D.

Hey Guys,

does anyone know if the glasses they give you in 3D cinemas are the same as the ones we have at home for our (totally useless - lol) 3D TVs?

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

They are not the same.

It depends on your TV.

The more recent crop of passive 3D TVs works with cinema ("Real3D") glasses. The first lot of 3D TVs used active (and mostly proprietary) glasses.

Hey Steffen,

mine are at least two years old, possibly three, and are active. I gather 'active' is not what's required for the cinema.

No, you're right, cinema glasses are definitely passive.

I saw the movie today. The odd "inaccuracies" aside (eh, it's a movie) it was visually spectacular!
Glad I saw it in IMAX, giant screen and 3D conveyed a sense of what I'd imagine it's actually like to be floating around in space.

It does what all space movies do: compresses space and time greatly. There are other things they obviously fictionalised (well, they kinda had to, otherwise, the story would have been impossible), but, as you say, it's a movie. Enjoy! :)

Awesome movie, yeah, some 'inaccuracies' but we were on the edges of our seats for almost the whole time and it just flew by. The 3D stuff and the sense of being there was brilliant. Needs to be seen twice we reckon to really see all that happens, it's very fast paced for the action shots of which most of the movie is..

great movie, a must see in 3d IMO. felt like you were there floating around, i could see it again for sure.

inaccuracies are unavoidable, but good to have a more 'realistic' sci-fi, there seems to be a couple around now like Europa Report - something to consider when you've got some cloud around (nowhere near as good but interesting b-grade film).

Watched it in 3D yesterday, I really enjoyed it, visually stunning. Recommend watching it in 3D if you can. Fast and action packed. Some great background starscapes, the Pleiades and Orion looked awesome. I give it a 8/10.

Very, very impressive zero G & visuals.

The miraculous & rather awkward George reincarnation scene 2/3 the way through (after he's drifted off to cark it from oxygen deprivation) was a bit bizarre!

But still a terrific, thoroughly entertaining movie.

Saw it in 3D last night with a couple of mates. Visuals are stunning and I totally understand how a bunch of astro geeks here would love it but to go as far as to say it was fantastic?...Really? I've seen better. Sorry. Story line - nil, character development - nil. The soyuz module had more attitude than Sandra Bullock. Actually I would have killed her after 5min into the movie and keep going with Clooney. He was much more fun. :P

.. and the bit when he walks in the pod after knocking on the window and take his helmet off for a chat? oh my... what a cliff hanger... was she dreaming? I wonder... wtf? LOL

I didn't expect a lot and was pleasantly surprised. Constant action.
I was surprised when it was over as it seemed too soon but it was 90 minutes!

A surprisngly good movie with special effects of the variety - how did they do that?

Greg.

After asking a few questions about the extent of the "M" rating, we saw it last Friday in 3D, with our two daughters. Although the main two actors are not my usual favorites, I thought their parts were played pretty well. I thought Sandra Bullock did a great job, and George Clooney's role was quite short anyway, so nothing to complain about really, any apprehension quickly fizzled, we all liked the movie.

Given the very high IMDB rating of 8.7, I guess more people would agree its worth seeing. Although I can understand that too much hype may create over-expectations... Given the great visuals, I thought there was enough of a story, and the character development (at least in Sandra Bullocks case) was enough, also noticed a few cries, I guess from those with kids. And totally understood the part re George Clooney coming back to life. Didn't get it?, mmm...well, I guess, Houston we may had a problem.

I saw it at IMAX in 3d, holy ****, you haven't seen 3d until you've seen IMAX 3d. What an amazing and terrifying movie I loved it.

Thought the George Clooney return was an hallucination caused by lack of oxygen?
Edge of the seat stuff - still digging my wife's nails out of my arms - 24 hours later :-D

So I just finished watching Gravity. While the special effects were great, the movie itself didn't WOW me.
Disappointed they killed off George Clooney too early.

Just my opinion.

I thought the visual effects were out of this world. Try to find an article about how it was made. Seems the entire film was made without the actors, including the music and all sound effects using models for the actors. The actors were filmed hanging from wires in a totally black tank where they had to recreate every move made in the first filming by the "models." This was so difficult that both the director and Sandra B. said they would never take on a project like this again. I think this film should win every award for special effects. Really worth it even though the story is pretty contrived and unbelievable. The effects are so good it really hardly matters. I found the 3D quite good...much unlike a lot of films where the 3D hits you in the face. This was pretty subtle and after a little bit you never think about it, but it sure adds to the overall impression.

I'm usually just into my sci-fi for big bangs and spaceships. Almost a bit miffed to find myself thinking of the many themes in Gravity for days afterwards. I really enjoyed the closing scenes I realised later. She's a different lady ready to drag herself out of water and breath like the first amphibians - ready to live and not take it for granted.

Sound was great too actually. Love the way ambient sounds gradually came back as air pressure came up etc.

Not so sure about the orbits of all the stations - I think in reality even the spaceshuttle wouldn't have enough delta V to get between Hubble and ISS for example. Hey, but its fiction! :D
Was wondering if I'd get a chance to see it in IMAX 3D when in Sydney last week but couldn't get there alas.

Colleague at work took her kids, 12 & 17 to see it only in 2D. She said it was an awesome watch and she is not techno savy but her youngest said it was the scariest movie he'd ever seen and loved it. Again, same comment about how the 90 mins just flew by.

I caught Gravity last night at the local complex and it was my first 3D cinema experience (I rarely go to the movies). Half way through the adds a message instructed us to put on our glasses. Some of the half hearted 3D adds were flickering and I was wondering how I could watch a 90 min movie without having a fit. Then the trailer for the next part of the Hobbit came on and I was sold. For some movies, 3D is now a must!

I hope Gravity wins some of the special effects awards over the next year!

phew, glad you said that Paula, I really enjoyed the movie, though wasn't ecstatic over it, but why did they kill dear George so quickly, while she was fumbling in all directions.
Sandra did a great job though, and I too liked the ending.

I saw this in a special theatre in Vancouver today.

Ps ... I really wanted that to be George who came back in the Soyez.

I agree with Marks comments, it was big on special effects but otherwise lacklustre, I found myself looking at my watch to gauge when it was going to end. HRH Liz was similarly underwhelmed.

I know this thread is a little old but I went and saw it for the second time yesterday. But this time in 3D as the first time we accidentally saw a 2D screening. I really enjoyed it in 2D so felt I needed to experience it in 3D. Decided to see it at IMAX last night at the 8:45pm screening and it was awesome.

But the funny thing was that as we were sitting outside IMAX at Darling Harbour I noticed this "satellite" approaching us which continued to get brighter and brighter, I thought that has to be ISS and sure enough it was. Thought it was pretty special to see it do a pass directly over head just minutes before seeing it get smashed to billions of pieces in a movie!

Steffen
