The winner of the Eurovission??thing could provide a few and I dont think you even need a reason to dislike any of them its that easy. I listern to that "style" frequently on JJJ to remind me of the extrodinary tastes in music that exsist..the vocals I can not believe..mind you some of the guitar work is exceptional to the point where it is sad to think a fine guitarist having to earn a living that way.

Jefferson Starship - We Built This City.

I feel like going on a killing rampage when I hear it.

It appears I'm not the only one: http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2004-04-18-worst-songs_x.htm

Alex,

They were pathetic.

That style of music (with thematics) was done more than ten years ago by a band called GWAR.

The main riff of that song is something that I've heard a long time ago, as well. I just can't remember the name of it. I'll post if I recall.

It's so sad that the music of today is nothing but mainstream commercialised garbage catering for the lowest common denominator. Gone are the days where musicians were musicians and made music for the sake of making music; it was what they did best. I only have to mention The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Jethro Tull, to name but a few.

Regards,
H

WE BUILT THIS CITY, You beat me to it ;) It is definatly my worst song and a monumental sell out. If is funny comparing Jefferson Starship on the Woodstock film as a bunch of Intense Hippy Nerds to their mid eighties film clips of ageing rockers done up like teen wanabees and lamentable hairstyles.

Also I dislike, American pie-Don McLean, Teardrops-Womack and Womack, Where do you go my lovely-Peter Sarstedt and many many more :D

My stomach churns everytime I hear a tune from an old classic regurgitated, recycled and most cases thoroughly murdered by some RnB or rap artist(and i use the term sarcasticly).

These people falsely gain musical cred from standing on the shoulders of those who went before them, and recycling riffs just old enough to not be known by their target audience.

The latest example uses the tune from Tainted Love.

The Gwen Stefani "Rich Girl" is pretty bad. The music is bad enough but the lyrics are an absolute shocker

It starts out with a tautology :P (and some nahnahnonsense):

If I was a rich girl nah nah nah nah nah ...
I'd have all the money in the world if I was a wealthy girl
....

Aaaagh Steve, did you have to remind me about that one:doh:
That has to be right up there.

My nomination goes to Barbie Girl - Aqua.
Coldplay is also starting to get very thin on the nerves of late.

funny thing is, probably is probably not many people have heard the worst song ever written - thank goodness! it was never recorded! teehee

basically 80% -90% of popular mainstream music that came out in the '80's would qualify for me - I'm sorry, but it was the gayest most insipid music era ever - remember androgyny?
The result no doubt of the coked out, so-called 'gay mafia' running the biz during that era, and the invention of the portable/mass affordable synthesiser, mtv, the music video coming to the fore ect. - I much prefered when the Italian/American mafia ran the charts in the '60's (payola ect.) they gave us Jimi hendrix et al - the 80's would never of happened with the mafia in charge!! (btw the mainstream popular music industry - radio ect. - is probably the most corrupt biz in the world - but no one cares of course, as its never ever been taken very seriously despite all the monies generated)

re modern music, as an old muso I have to bight my tongue, as I personally believe kids today are being ripped off badly music wise, this would definately qualify as the most cynical and manipulative era of popular music to date (and often openly and proudly to boot!). generally speaking, Image is way way more important than the music is ie. all style no substance (i'm not talking about dance/whatever its called music here - more about boy bands ect.).
But then you have to look at what they are really looking for, and that is something that gives there state of the art in fidelity 8.1 15" subs system a serious work out, and that requires something from a modern digital studio with superb digitally sampled sounds - ie: its how low the bass goes and how fast/much it vibrates your insides that matters now, not the melody ect. to me the music seems secondary to the aural pyrotechnics/showride and fame they seek - more just a auditory sensory stimulation thing (sound familiar?) than a cerebral experience?
But then popular music has always been technology driven - even mozart ect. ie: the invention of the piano, the invention of the solid body electric guitar to rock and roll and on and on blah blah.
But theres plenty of newer modern bands/acts artists I still like, dont get me wrong, but then hardcore techno music heads would think my choices mostly lame and made for old people to think their hip hehe - that would ruin the essence of being rebellious if I liked it?

Theres too many songs in the list I dislike! Ask me about the best songs & I could probably come up with some.

My pet hate is rehashed oldies though, to cut a long story short.

My daughter heard a song on the radio in the car a few weeks ago and didn't like it.

2 days ago she was watching one of those annoying Music stations on PayTV and the same song came up with a stunning Video-clip and she says "that song is hot!"

I agree Kearn, is it the music or all the hype?

The song can be crap, but who cares as long as it has a 75K pearler vid. clip to go with it.

Ken, the visuals are too important in some new music now I reckon,... I hope it wasnt that guy watshisname, 50 cents (US) - btw did his value go up when he was in oz back awhile - was he 75 cents (AU) whilst here??? I been wondering about that :screwy:

Who said Neil Young? Aaah, those were the days, music to slash your wrists to! Damaged my needle with that one!
I think so far there is a trend towards an agreement that rehashed songs are the worst. Too many modern artists doing cover versions or modified cover versions give me the screamings. Usually it's just to revamp their declining popularity because it makes people think "hey, havent' I heard that before?"

I agree 80's music SUCKS. The decade was a musical black hole. Gimmie the whole rock era from 1955 to 2006 but leave out those ten horrendous years. I Grew up in the 80's so I suffered during my sensitiveTeen years. When I was a teen I mostly listened to 60's and 70's rock (still do) with a liking for the epic guitar solo  The 90's couldn't come fast enough and was rewarded with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Silverchair. Todays music is a mixed bag, The so called 'Rock Rebirth' genre is great, Wolfmother, Jet, White Stripes, Black keys, Powder finger etc etc but the doof doof crap and disposable R&B and pop Idol stuff leaves a lot to be desired.

Other Baaaaad songs include;

Footsteps, Womack and Womack. Most boring song ever.

Behind Blue Eyes, Limp Bizkit. The Who original penned by Townshend is a classic but this version is a remorseless dirdge.

Safety Dance, Men without hats. What the hell was this song about?

American pie, Madonna. As bad as the original but mercifully not as long.

Mull of Kintyre, Wings. The musical equivelent of a tooth extraction.

The War Song, Culture Club. I havent heard this song for over 20 years and I am thankfull for that ;)

Yep a dark chapter in pop history Mick - the people responsible for the '80's pop should be brought to justice for crimes against humanity :) - I guess it was the beginning of the mega disposable 15 minutes of fame era (which has been raised to an art form now lately and continues to escalate - where does it end?)
I was 17 in 1980 so its not like it wasnt my era, felt cheated and ripped off badly - lucky had the old stuff to get me thru
It was Nirvana that heralded the end of the dark ages and definately the other seattle bands pearl jam in there too.
Lots of great 90's acts started to cheer me up, as you mentioned some, I would add, the cruel sea, seal, all the so called manchester stuff (even tho that started in the 80's really) , happy mondays, inspiral carpets ect ect. ect. living colour, massive attack, chemical bros, crystal method, neville bros, chilli peppers, ween, ben harper, dave rainey, beck and to many others to reel off now, btw i really like gnarls barkley atm.
I wonder if U2 will be the last great supergroup? who will replace them?

Dream Theater. Liquid Tension Experiment. Symphony X. Dragonland. Dragonforce.

There's plenty of good rock music out there, if you search for it.

Thankfully, you'll never, ever, hear those names mentioned in the mainstream press. It is that which heralds lollypopism.

reading this thread I realise theres to many to name ...haha
kylie and a few others who went through the same production crew of that time deserve special mention ..because they couldn't/ can't sing in key mostly ..technology finally could make the woefull sound passable .. manufactured muzak was born around then and not much has changed since ..jefferson starships ..built this city .. is a tragic song ..though

no wait its worse than tragic

While I am not a fan of the song...she borrowed the tune and lyrics (with slight modification) from the musical "Fiddler on the Roof"...there is a song "If I were a Rich Man"...

Kind of embarrassed now to mention that I know it...:ashamed:
