Palm Tree Fall

That scared the s||t out of me. Heard a loud thump and here's what's in my front yard. One of the palms fell. Lucky it fell in the only spot where it wouldn't level anything. :scared:

That's the third tree I lost due to wind and the second palm in the past 6 months. I took shots of the roots. It looks like it was holding by bugger all. Is this some kind of disease or just the way it is? Very shallow bulbs. If that's the case I'm going to get the rest of them chopped. :help:

That's fairly normal for palms, I think. I remember a few of ours having shallow root systems. We removed a lot of them for that reason which was probably a good idea - a big storm knocked over a neighbour's palm - fortunately it fell away from there house and onto the road.

:mad2: Yes they a sh!ts of things , we had one fall across our neighbours car a week ago , you were lucky and what a mess! the poor buggers and yes it was hardly windy , end of the dry season I think ??? .

Same problem here.
I have to cut mine down. One fell under similar circumstance.
I notice that one has a split it's probably only a matter of time before it will fall!

Thanks guys for the info. Yeah they're all going now. Getting a quote for the lot. I can't have 500kg of water logged wood flatten one of my car. :sadeyes: Lucky nobody's parked and the wind is from the north this time. The one that previously fell was on the south side anf fell northward with a southerly. Man... I gotta play Lotto more often. They both fell exactly in line avoiding everything around. :rolleyes: This thing is so heavy I can't even roll it.

Check the legalities first Marc. Apparently there can be fines up to $1.1M per tree!

We're moving partly because of trees. The council won't let us cut any of them down, except one species of palm. Developers can clear fell whole sites. :(

Rang the Liverpool City Council. They said no permit needed. Go for it. Must be different for each council. I enquired a while ago about my trees falling on stuff and it's covered by the house insurance if it falls on my walls. Not sure about the cars or neighbourgh's house but I think his house insurance would cover. If the tree is deemed unhealthy or diseased and that was the cause of the fall then you could be in trouble otherwise it's an 'act of god'. Never know where the wind is going to blow from and how strong. Anyway they're all going next week. Piece of mind.

Check the root ball for termites, I bought a house in Mooloolaba with 23 of those bloody palms in the yard, after 2 weeks I had them all down and to the tip, 5 had termite nests in the root ball.

Can't see any termites but there's a lot ants everywhere and it looks like half of the trunk is just porous and dry and full of them. Might have weakened the base. It was hanging by only 1/4 of wood out of the whole trunk section. It's surprising it held straight at all.

If ever council tells you NO, do what a neighbour that I know did - pushed the whole freaking lot over one night, and then told them vandals had done it.

Considering they were dropping those freaking fruit/dates all over everyone's lawn, boat, cars, I think the neighbourhood would have turned a VERY blind eye, or helped ;)

Not the current neighbour (well, across the street). She just about had a conniption when the council garbage truck knocked down a branch from a tree (not a palm) that is on the median strip (and which council prunes every year).

When council did it this year, I asked the guys to cut the whole damned thing down. She on the other hand raised a god-awful ruckus and fuss.

1. Big winds here in Canberra today. This morning I removed one very large Mannifera off a house in the southern suburbs, two off footpaths, one off a road and they just keep dropping.

2. Last year I removed many off houses, sheds, fences and one off a panel van.

Shame about the fence. There is a palm just like that inside our pool fence, but since the house is sold the new owners can worry about it. The new house doesn't have any big palms.

I'm getting conflicting information about this. My wife rang my home and content insurer who said I'm liable for damage caused by my trees because they are within my property limits. Most if not all the guys who quoted me for the removal job said that they deal with it all the time and when a big tree (gum tree) falls over multiple properties, each dwelling insurance (where it landed) takes care of its portion. So the jobs get cut down in sections and that's the insurance of each 'recipient' for a lack of a better word that pays. :question:

Marc, we could see the northern edge of the dust cloud almost due west as we approached Castle Hill from West Pennant Hills.

Bonnyrigg and Cecil Hills lost power. That's two whole suburbs in a blackout. Couple of mates in Villawood and Wetherill Park say they can smell some smoke really bad. Gee. Hope it's not a fire or something.

The "Fires Near Me" app is having trouble coping with the number of fires. Numerous marked "out of control" within 100Km of here - East Kurrajong, Castlereagh, Leppington, St Helens Park, Mount York, Springwood, Yanderra/Balmoral, Lithgow, Doyalson, Gwandalan, Watagan NP, Kanangrad-Boyd NP.
