This post on the Yahoo ServoCat Group this morning.

We are looking at offering an upgrade to the DSC encoder systems out there now topping out at 10,000 counts (2.16 arcmins) of resolution. This would be a 30,000 count (43 arcsecs) encoder available for both axes - when equipped as such the comparative resolution is 900%. In testing an Obsession 18" classic had ALT values that consistently were in the 0.02 degree range and lower.

This system should improve your pointing - potentially a great deal - assuming other factors like alignment quality and mount errors are in check. It should also aide TPAS when used providing a higher degree of confidence in values and thus in results.

The installation is relatively straight forward - on the AZ the height is 1 3/8" worse case and it has been fitted to, as mentioned, one of the lowest height (mirror box to rocker box swing through separation) scopes out there - others should be a bit easier. It is unlikely it will work on Obsession UC scopes due to the very low height on the AZ and the arm arrangement on the ALT.

I'll need to have at least 50 paid pre-orders to make this viable as parts costs are not cheap. The price for the ALT axis starts at $189 with an additional bracket probably needed in most cases (another $20 - $60). The AZ will be $189.

I just clicked on the link, This is what I received from Firefox.

Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (mhtml) isn't associated with any program.

Cheers:thumbsup:

Dunno Ron,

I guess if you're interested in more info from Gary you could go direct to the Stellarcat website via Google. I just put this post out there for anyone out there who might be interested in upgrading their encoders. I put my hand up for three sets for my scopes, 47 more to go.

Thanks Barry
I will have a look at at stellarcat site.:)
The other Gary may have some info also.
Cheers

Thanks Barry,

Thanks for the post.

Gary Myers at StellarCAT (http://www.stellarcat.com) report they are 10K encoders but with a 3:1 pulley system
and the mechanics to make them provide 30K effective.

For the benefit of other readers who may not be familiar with the acronym,
TPAS refers to the Argo Navis in-built Telescope Pointing Analysis System.

All mount's have geometric and gravitational flexure errors to some extent.
With legacy Digital Setting Circle (DSC) systems, the pointing performance
is often limited by these sources of error, sometimes severely so.

TPAS can analyze and potentially compensate for some of the more commonly
encountered systematic pointing errors. For this reason we refer to Argo Navis
as a Digital Telescope Computer (DTC) rather than a DSC.

Thanks Gary, that make sense.

And yes 30k encoders not 30000k lol which will be a few more years down the track. :)
