I think that Richard Muhlack and Justin Tilbrook have quite adequately shown us all the ability of a DSLR in the right hands and determination.
I completely agree about the tools analogy. My pet peeve is when people claim it is impossible to get decent astroimages out of an OSC CCD. Pure bollocks. Not saying mine are any good, but I persist at it and am (SLOWLY) improving.

I'd like to think I'm in the same boat as Lewis - I'm a big fan of the OSC CCD. It's a god send for we time constrained imagers!
But geezz, it's going to take me a while to get anywhere near Ivan's images!!

For me the biggest advantage to having a cooled mono ccd is narrowband imaging. Not all of us have clear dark cold Namibian skies coupled with a large aperture fast newtonians. These images are amazing, but I would attribute some of the accolades to the scopes location.

Mono CCD camera is in every way superior than DSLR.
If used in same conditions with same level of processing, final image with mono CCD will always be better.

His DSLR's are astro modified and he lives in a freezer, two factors that bring DSLR's closer to astro cameras. I see he also shoots film.
I'm curious that with his skill level, why he hasn't moved on to mono astro cameras.

Fantastic work, makes me want to whip out the tools and open up the 5DII. I was very happy with the performance of my unmodded 5DII at astrofest, admittedly the overnight temps hovered around zero, that may have helped.
My 450D used to hum at zero degrees at Astrofest. 3-4 months later however it would be 15-25 degrees late at night while I'm trying to shoot something faint like the Rosette and the noise was frustrating to fight.
Still, there's no questioning he is using his DSLR to devastating effect. Wonderful work!
