I am thinking of getting a new beaut eyepiece for my 12" LB. I phoned up York Optical and they have this range of EP's called Hyperion - made in Germany with 68deg FOV 7 element, which they say is roughly same as Mark 1 eyeball so ok. This EP comes 1.25" but by unscrewing the bottom of it, you can set it up as 2" with corresponding change in focal length (think its longer).
So it is like a mini Barlow thrown in as well . Cost $235 or 400 for 2. They said that the diameter of the bit you look through is double of what a similar Plossl is and great eye relief.....
Does anybody have experience?? I am thinking of maybe 13mm and 8mm.
:D :D :help:

Good! Nice to see York finally getting on the ball with their prices. $400 for 2 Hyperions is a decent buy. The focal lengths you chose are spot on the most useful ones for the 12" Dob. I say go for it! :)
I would not bother using the EPs without the barlow bit, because they will perform poorly in the 12" Dob. But you may be interested that Baader are coming out with focal length tuning rings that you can screw between the built in barlow lens and the rest of the EP to reduce the focal length. The 13mm could be turned into an 11 or 9mm, for example. For me, the most useful deep sky FL for the 12" Dob is around 10mm, so these rings would be handy.
The Hyperions are very similar to the Stratus which work very well in fast scopes like dobs. I've used both the 8 and 13mm Stratus and have been very happy with them. In fact I kept my 13mm Stratus over a 13mm T6 Nagler.

Well those 2 Hyperion eyepieces are now in my brief case. They are HUGE. Cant wait to try them out - guess it'll be the Moon this weekend and then something DSO. Will have to hide them from the wife though. Actual cost was a bit more than in my post - $440 for the two. Judging by their weight, they have to be value for money!!!:D :D

Well done! I think you and the LB will love those EPs. :D sorry, I failed to mention they are not made in Germany. A German company does put their name on them but afaik they are made where just about everything else is. But it's performance that matters not where it's from. ;)
 Just pretend they came with the scope. :P
Ah, if only they sold eyepieces by the kilo! We'd all be queueing up at the T6 Nagler counter.

I have the 13mm hyperion and am very happy with it. I would like to compare side by side with a T6 Nagler as I've noticed some reflection (from my eyes) on the Baader on bright objects. I've heard that the coatings are different between the hyperion and the Stratus but I believe that it's probably just marketing hype.

The coatings are really different between the Stratus and the Hyperion eyepieces. Here's a pic to show it. Left is the Hyperion, mid is the Stratus and right is the Vixen LVW.

The Hyperion is clearly much darker then the Stratus.
Anyway, I've got both the 13 and 8mm. Never regretted buying them. Towards the edges the 13mm gets softer but not very much. This EP is most used in my Celestron 12" F/5.
Anyway, have fun with them.
