It is sad to note that Albert Jones passed away on Sept 11. I'm not sure whether I ever met him or not but when I started my interest in variable stars 40 years ago, he was already held in awe by the NZ astronomical community. The really sad part of his passing for me is what appears to me the total lack of interest by the NZ media. I had to find this out on a US website. Sadly missed.

A well lived and long life.
He was and will remain a legendary amateur astronomer.
I never met you, yet I knew so much about you.
RIP Albert Jones

I remember seeing him on The Sky at Night when he discovered supernova SN1987A in the LMC all those years ago. Seemed like a lovely down-to-earth guy. Big loss to astronomy.
