Hi All,

I'm home, at last.

Had a wonderful trip to the US but it ended with a little inconvenience and added an extra day.

Boarded the plane on time at LAX and was it delayed for a few hours due to a fuel leak in an engine. That fixed we were finally pushed back and began to taxi. We were about to take off when the flight was grounded, due to a continuing problem with that same engine, apparently? Four hours on the plane and all we did was a taxi circuit!

Qantas then disembarked passengers and organised hotels for the night. We left 24 hours later, after the engine was fixed.

Some people complained about the way Qantas handled it all, but I thought they handled it all rather well and quite professionally. They kept us well informed about the delay and what would happen next. It must have been a logistics nightmare to find rooms for nearly 500 passengers. And, they organised all the transport to and from these hotels too.

It was interesting to see who complained though; it certainly wasn't other Aussies on the flight. I asked one guy who was complaining why he flew Qantas? His answer, because they are safe! Well why complain then when they put safety first! :screwy:

Another thing, if it had been a budget airline, would they have put their passengers up in a hotel, with all meals included? I doubt it!

Me, I just think it is all part of the adventure of travel and I, for one, am certainly happy that safety is their top priority.

I think Qantas are great! :D

Now, it is back to the grindstone.......to save for my next trip to the states. :D

Cheers Peter

Actually... yes.

US Department of Transportation makes it clear that any cancelled flight resulting in any person who are not residing in the departure city are entitled to accomodations, meals and "normal expenses" (this would include toiletries, transportation and reasonable incidentals).

The reason why you were on the tarmac for only 4 hours is because of the DoT penalty of $27500 per passenger for any plane sitting on the tarmac that fails to take-off.

OIC!

BTW: Welcome back... glad you had a good time.

Thanks OIC. I didn't know that there are penalties.

Thanks Laurie. There was, of course, much more to the trip than what I wrote about. I had a lot of wonderful experiences amd met some wonderful people. I am looking forward to going again, hopefully early in the new year, work permitting.

I would have loved to time the next trip to coincide with Stellafane next year, but my youngest daughter is getting married that same weekend. I don't think it would go down well if I missed the wedding.

Hopefully it will be Stellafane 2015, as I have promised to take a very lovely lady, whom I met under some really unusual circumstances on the second day of the trip, at the Griffith Observatory. This lady, of course, is what is attracting me back to the US. :D

Cheers Peter

I've been through that and worse Peter - international flights/airports are hell on Earth and to be avoided if at all possible in my experience. It might be more tolerable if one can afford to ride up front.

Welcome back Peter.

It has been a great read to follow your trip through the USA.

It's my turn soon - on Thursday flying London to Sydney.

4 years ago I made the decision never again to fly on Qantas given the number of incidents they were having, as from an engineering perspective it indicates the are skimping on maintenance and IMHO its only a matter of time before the lose an aircraft with all on board - and their incident rate implies the likelihood is significant compared to some other carriers.

Reliability centred maintenance when done properly means no failures in service. None. Not even a little hiccup. Much the same as Japanese cars.

FWIW I'm on Singapore airlines this time, my other choice is Cathay. And yes I drive a Japanese car.
