Tarantula in Ha

Hi guy.

My first real go at processing Ha data. What an absolute pleasure it is to work with this spectrum. Neat, clean and loads of contrast. This only issue I've run into it is that pushing my subs out to 10 or 15 mins is showing some flexure somewhere and I suspect it's they way my guider is attached that's causing it. the stars tend to trail a little diagonally.

I think i might need to redo this as I've blown the core. Would wavelets help with that? The data is there when you dial down the historgram you see all the detail in the linear data, I just dont know how to bring it out. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway, this is 37 subs at 600 secs each totaling about 6hrs of data.

Lovely image. Sharp, contrasty and well composed. I like the way the outer circular wisps on left and right balance the more chaotic stuff in the centre frame. Good tonal balance showing the faint stuff without burning out the centre unduly. Well done.

I wouldn't worry too much about the core. It's about right given the whole dynamic range you've captured in the field.

I assume since you mention wavelets that you are using PixInsight? The HDRMultiscaleTransform process can help to tame the highlights but you need to be careful that the result doesn't look too flat. LocalHistogramEqualization can be used to add back contrast.

Yes I'm using pixinsight. I tried atrous wavelets last night but couldn't get it looking any less blown out, It was probably the wrong tool and I have no idea what I'm doing with it anyway. I think a trip to Harrys Shed may be in order this weekend.

I need to,learn how use masks as I think that would help with this sort of thing.

Nice pic Sandy. There's a lot to be said for black and white in narrowband--really shows the detail without all that distracting colour.

ATWT is good for noise reduction and sharpening but I can't think of any obvious way to use it for adjusting dynamic range.
