M31 Luddites perspective Astrofest

A rough process of a single uncropped frame of M31, ED80, SW reducer, 8 minutes @ iso800 on 5DmkII , I was chuffed to get this target as we never see it in Tassie, apologies for the processing my PS skills are almost zero, I'm sure that there is more detail I can tease out at a later time. I had a small abberation at the lower centre that had to be cloned out, not sure what was causing that as it was only apparent in a couple of shots.

Thats a really nice shot. Very clean for a dslr, I have a 5d MKII as well and my subs dont look anywhere near as clean as that.

Geez, that is amazing for a single 8min exposure! Did you use the in camera long exposure noise reduction? My 2008 5DII is shocking for long exposure dark noise. An 8min exposure at ISO800 would have been drowned out with the noise. My 2012 5DII was much better. This is an excellent result. Well done!

Thanks guys, I do have some more subs and one dark, hopefully when I'm up to speed with PS and DSS I can tease some more detail out. This trip was my first serious attempt at astrophotography, I've got heaps to learn.

My 5DII (bought feb 2009) has quite a few hot pixels, which fade as the temps drop, this image was early in the morning, the hot pixels don't really show much on full images, crops are a different story. I found that too much exposure brought the background noise up, the frames that worked best were those that looked a little underexposed.
This one was taken around 4am and it was damn cold, hovering around freezing.
