Hi everyone. Wow - there's a lot of us here. I'm Richard and I'm so glad I got bitten by the stargazing bug recently. Ive bought my first scope after sifting through a LOT of material and even more opinion and then asked myself 2 questions; 1) How much time can I realistically devote to my new hobby with 2 small boys around?, and 2) What will that that time enable me to do?
So I got a bit of a bargain paying $650 (delivered from the UK) for a brand new Celestron 130SLT. I found Amazon.co.uk the best bcs they tend to deliver to Aus and you avoid paying any VAT (GST equiv)which is currently at 20%.

I'm also setting up a brand new local stargazers society for the NSW south coast at nswscas.org (http://www.nswscas.org) and if you live between Tilba Tilba and Ulladulla and are interested in joining me and whoever else shows up, then send me an email on info@nswscas.org. We'll hook up, find some stars, drink some tea or cold ones (depending on the season) and go "Oh, WOW! Awesome!" a lot.

Sound like fun? Get in touch. I'd love to have a good old chat and swap tips and expertise on my new and exciting hobby.:hi:

;) Hi Richard , great idea you have and I wish you all the best , but be aware its a huge undertaking .

A good friend Terry H. and his wife Gail and I were the founding members of my old club back in NZ the , 'Northland Astro Society' and the amount of pit falls , humps , negativity , local Govt red tape and peoples general lethargy etc. etc. was almost enough to make ours still born .

But we persevered and with the help of other astronomers and the local newspaper we got it up and running , and is now one of the most active clubs in NZ , try a 'google' and have a look , it will give you inspiration .
I do miss it , but it was a lot of work over lots of years and it aint a club without members so do a whole lot of advertising to recruite some .

Most local rags will run a few articals for you , if you wright them up , for free , flyers , posters , schools ( the best place) other clubs , etc , etc .
But be ready for a lot of work and dis-appointments along the way , but don't give up you are doing a great thing for all of us . .
Good luck again .

Brian.
