I am creating this thread in fun to give all of those people out there like me who feel the need to now jump on the Australian Soccer Team's bandwagon/coattails.

I freely admit, I have neither followed the sport nor did I get up early/stay up late to watch...and yet, now that they are advancing, I want to bask in the reflected glory too...

I can not name 3 players on the team but I am now for them 100%!

I learned my lesson last year with the Sydney Swans who's bandwagon/coattails I joined at half time of the grand final victory match.

I freely admit I nearly missed out on that one but I was still able to claim victory over my colleagues in other states through my last minute "conversion"...

And while this thread could be used for any bandwagon I am submitting it for soccer this time...so I am showing my hand early this time...

Go Australia in the world cup!

*Note this is meant to be mildly funny and entertaining. I apologise in advance to "true beleivers" who are offended by my being a "johnny Come Lately" fan.

lol Scott.. I've always enjoyed soccer but never enough to watch much of it on TV.

I think the fact that i'm getting up early for these games now counts me in as a bandwagon jumper too.

Gooo Aussies!

I do hope that soccer takes off in Australia now though, it's a great game..

I thought soccer was one of those weird unusual games like lacrosse or hockey that you get to play once or twice in PE at high school, and then forget about .

You mean there are people that take it seriously? :eyepop:
:P

I know what you mean, I am not a soccer fan normally, but I do love the world cup for some reason. Have watched a great deal of the top games in fifa WC ever since 1990 (its only every 4 years anyway) when I was living in england when england made it to the the semi finals that year.
It was the first time they had gone that far since the the 60's, (when they won it). man the buzz was unbelievable, and I caught the virus then!
The streets were deserted (EDIT:when the last games were on) , it was like one of those end of the world movies and the streets of london and every where were completely empty and quiet, very weird experience that stayed with me.
hey we all watch the olympics every 4 years - do you watch track and field/ underwater ballet/ping pong any other time??? so get over it :P
anyway fantastic blinkin match, I have watched all 3 live so far - Italy next - a top team that is paying very well this time *gulp* and minus emerton *scared* but who knows - YAY! GO SOCCEROO'S!!!!

Lets face it who would pay all that money to go overseas to watch a handful of men kick around a pig skin full of air.

I'd rather buy a new scope. :P

I'm not a football fan, but the skill level in soccer impresses me, much more so than the other flavours of football.

Soccer usually does nothin' for me but it is great to see Australia doing so well in a non traditional Aussie sport :)

matt

If you are right, that it's not a "traditional" Aussie sport, it's because we keep describing it and regarding it in such terms.

But I think you'll find it's always been more popular than the fans, commentators and administrators of the more "traditional" sports would like to believe or admit:)

Don't get me wrong. I love my other footy codes, my cricket, tennis etc

But there's always been massive grass roots support for soccer. It just needs the level of success that this crop of Socceroos is delivering.

Go Australia!!!!

somebody say Soccer was NOT a traditional sport?
how far back do you want to go?

"Asked the question what is Australias oldest soccer club and most Australian soccer fans could peel off the answer in moments. The book 'Jack Pollard's Soccer Records' tells us that it was the Granville club in located Sydney's western suburbs. Formed in 1883 by ironworkers and founded in 1885 the club is no longer a part of the NSWSF competition having fallen victim to financial circumstances years ago."

That's right Geoff.

But it's a massive can of worms opening the Great Soccer Debate:lol:

Let's just all get along!!!! (LOL)

Put it this way even during the Olympics,Rugby Union World Cup, Rugby League World Cup? NEVER have you seen so many Aussies traveling overseas to follow there teams.
They don't call it the WORLD game for nothing, also more Aussie kids play Football than any other sport:lol:

Also I should add, I dont mind soccer being called the World Game...
although in my near 40 yrs this is the first time I have ever heard
it called that. Must be a soccer fan thing, because you see Rugby
Union was meant for the select few :P no offence intended

Hey didn't the Wallabies put the Irish away last night, looking forward
to the 8th July :D

Yes, old world, thirld world etc....I guess it is the world game...

Anyway, in spite of my lack of appreciation and understanding of the skill and excitement of the game, I still hope Australia does well...after all, I did "jump on the bandwagon" (last week)

With respect to the Wallabies "train"...no need to "jump" on, I've been a ticket holder for a while

I do not like soccer at all, but I do know that it is a skillfull game with a Massive world-wide following, and I applaude them for that.

As most of you know, I am a Rugby League fanatic and proud of it! I played in 7 Rugby Union Grand Finals (and we won all 7) and was even selected to play for Australia in the Under 16's!!! But I still prefer Rugby League.

I did not jump on the Soccer Bandwagon coz I don't like the game but congrats to the Aussies for doing so well. I won't bag their game, I just choose not to watch it.

On the local side of matters, we have a hard time here in Victoria trying to promote Rugby League, but even Aussie Rules has been suffering with the closure of 2 Clubs in Ballarat due to a loss of players switching to Soccer. And this is not because of the World Cup! This happened 2 years ago and a 3rd Club may be folding next year. Geez, with even Aussie Rules suffering in Aussie Rules Land, what hope have we got with Rugby League getting bigger in Victoria :(

State of Origin next week in Melbourne may spark a temporary interest but it will fade.

Ken is this adults or kids being lost to soccer?
I hear that a lot of it is rooted in over protective mums steering kids away from the more manly sports ( :P ) for fear of their little precious ones getting hurt on the field.

Kids Geoff.

Although I must admit (with a smile) that we gained quite a few kids this year over last year!

That's disappointing Mike.

I thought I put a lot of thought into my responses to what were some fairly inflammatory comments/remarks:shrug:

It was going nowhere Matt. It served no purpose to see you two arguing in public. It was just going to escalate so I'm stopping it now.

Sorry to lock your thread Scott but I think it had reached it's shelf life.
