My take on M20 for this year.

This started life as panel 1 of a 6 panel mosaic, but after looking at this capture in Ha I was taken by the amount of nebulosity in the area and how M20 was linked through to M8. This HARGB is the outcome then of 6 hours of data using a Canon 60Da and a Ha6nm filter along with a couple of hours of RGB. Maybe one day I will finish the mosaic, but not this year.

RGB Image M20 Trifid Nebula in context (http://astrob.in/full/51228/)
HA Image M20 Trifid in context HA data (http://astrob.in/full/51230/)
I have popped up the Ha image as well though very little processing has been done on it, its there to show whats underneath all that star nonsense. Theres quite a bit of crunchy stuff I hadnt seen before.

Thanks for looking.

Thats a bummer...was hoping that you still had the zest to complete the mosaic project. Still a pretty cool result however with great detail on display. Well done. The single frame composition is a little confusing as it delivers a mixed message. I'm not sure if I'm suppose to be looking at M8, M20 or the bits in between. I hope you get the time to bring it all together. If this single frame is anything to go by, it will be a stunning result.

Thanks Russell, I got to frame 4 of 12 then the weather gods stopped play, and at this point the target is really not in the right place at this time of year with shorter nights coming in and me needing a lot more data using the DSLR and a fairly slow scope. (not that thats an excuse ;))

Cheers Steve, was impressed with the amount of detail the HA filter let me see

Yup..As Jase says, it could be mixed messages but when I was playing with the Ha data I just kept getting seeing more "stuff" so decided I would put this out.

:) Cheers. I still have the zest but I started this project just too late in the season. I need loads more time to get the Ha with a Canon and I have my obsy setup so I get best quality data based on my location, which basically means 3 hours max per night on this particular object. All told I need 12 clear nights..pah..

Looked around at your gallery, really nice stuff. Feeling inspired
