F1 followers will know that the 2014 season will see the introduction
of the new V6 turbo power units.

Mercedes AMG Petronas have released this short clip of what their
engine will sound like next year -

So Gary is this a move away from v10's for all the field or is Mercedes going alone with this? I think I heard the commentators a few races back commenting that the engines had been downsized a few years ago so are we also seeing a downsizing with the v6? This will be interesting to hear in the flesh as it's something you recognise immediately with f1's, the screaming v10 noise.

Any reason why and will this ultimately slow down the f1's?

There have been no V10s for several seasons now. When engine capacity was reduced from 3 litres to 2.4 litres, the engines all became V8s:)

Hi Simmo,

It is for all the field and is part of the mandated "formula" for 2014.

In 2013, they are all using 2.4 litre V8's (not V10's) which they introduced in 2006.

So come 2014, they are a 1.6 litre turbocharged V6.

Renault unveiled their 2014 engine in June -
http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2013/6/14690.html

As is mentioned there, whereas the current V8's rev at 18,000 rpm (and as you
will be familiar with watching the race, they routinely hit the rev limiter down
some of the straights) the 2014 engines rev at 15,000 rpm, however the turbos
then produce an additional whine at 25,000 rpm.

Anyone who has been to an F1 circuit can testify to how loud, well beyond the
pain threshold, the cars are. Apparently the new engines will still be phenomenally
loud. So race goers will still be able to experience that unbelievable terrifying
banshee wail the cars make.

The current V8's produce in excess of 750bhp.

The makers say the new engines output power exceeds that of the current engines,
producing some 600bhp but they apparently have energy recovery systems
powered from the exhaust that harvest an additional 160 horsepower for over
30 seconds each lap.

Apparently the current engines are rated for about 2000km but the new ones
are being engineered to last 5000km.

I've posted this link before, but it is fascinating to see and hear them testing
one of the current Renault engines in the test cell starting, at the 3:34 point in
the video. Love how it glows red hot. Imagine how quickly you could mow the lawn with this thing.

Cool video too Gary. didn't realise they had already done away with the v10.
1.6L is quite a jump down so they must be on the ball. With the weight saving, reduced mass and less horsepower they must surely be going to downsize the cars while they are at it you would think. Maybe we will see dimensions closer to the 80's cars with todays aerodynamics? Interesting to see what will unfold over the next couple of months and to see if the current competitors can keep up with development.

Better not go any smaller though. Might as well drop two wheels and call themselves MotoGP. :D

I have not been keeping up with F1 tech regulations for some years. Last time they ran turbo engines (then only 1.5 litres) HP approached 1000hp and 1200hp in qualifying. Clearly they must be limiting boost otherwise 2000hp would be possible with compounding. The fear of compounding closed own the last formula that allowed any form of supercharging.
