Hi Folks, cheap Aldi Medion Akoya laptops available for $399 at new Aldi Lilydale Melbourne.
Specs:
I3-3120M
15.6", 1366 x 768 (hell what do you expect at this price!)
500Gb HDD
4MB RAM in 1 slot of 2
2 x USB 2 & 2 x USB3
LAN 10/100/1000mbps (gigabit)
CD/DVD burner
the usual's...webcam BT wireless etc.
WIN 8 64bit
DVD is removable and I did find a spare SATA port but haven't investigated this further.

I only mention this as the cheapest cheap comparable laptop is around $499 from dell. These were $499 now $399 and are in fact Lenovo laptops priced around $200 cheaper than Lenovo. Around 50~60 or so left.

Over all ...works well but a little flimsy on the screen, but, aren't they all at this price range! You do get 60 day return warranty no frills.

I purchased one at $499...and returned it because of this sale and within the 60day period. I saved $100...yes call me cheap and no morals (yep that's me:D) but hey it's my money!

Only putting this out as this is the cheapest laptop I have seen for awhile with these specs.

Don't you mean its $508?
$399 for the laptop and $109 for Win 7 x64 to install after you have uninstalled Win 8?

The Lenovo are usually reliable and these have Thinkpad model numbers by the look of it.

Hope that's a typo Brendan. :) Nothing after Win3.11 will boot in that.

'feeware' - is that a typo, or is that what paid products are called these days - lol

I found a program "shareware" but they only trust you to make a donation.
I forget the name but it gives a"shell" button that displays from the Win 8, Win8.1 desktop just like a classic XP or Win 7.

Great for finding programs that have been installed without a short cut on the desktop.

Sorry same here...although I think I trolled the MSN forums and used "classic Shell" or something like that. There are a lot of them out there.

Under the hood, Win 8 is ok...it's just the interface that is a pain to navigate.

This lappy is ok, not a screamer in performance but more than good enough for $399!

While 399 bucks is all well and good as far as it goes, just be wary - this is an Aldi product after all. I've had the misfortune to have owned a few Aldi electronic products and every single one has been the cheapest sort of Chinese garbage.

All of them have been hopeless and I (eventually!) learned my lesson, and will no longer trust any Aldi electronics as far as I can throw them.

That said, 399 is cheap, and as long as one realises and accepts you get what you pay for, should be OK.

I have 2 Aldi TV's one 32" LCD, around 6+~7 years old now still going strong...another 42" 3~4 years old still 100% fault free. These were low cost TVs but hey IMHO they perform just as good as any comparable. I have other Aldi stuff and indeed most products fine.

Yes Aldi does put out some rubbish and I have been on the end of that suffice to say, I remember their first PVR...total rubbish! So any bad products were returned in the 60 day no questions refund period.

I wish all mfgrs did this. That would put the cat amongst the pigeons, especially in the low end laptop market.

I honestly cannot see the problem if given a 60 day get out of jail card free (return no questions asked) and a 2 year warranty. Also it's a Lenovo. Yes, low end Lenovo's are not that great and I don't have a great opinion of my last Lenovo (LCD flex cracked just out of warranty & of course they didn't want to know) but they are probably better than low end HP's ATM (and ACERs)...re: HP law suit.

UK has a big market for these Laptops, especially in Germany, which is a surprise.
