Got approval for a US work visa today so i'll be heading to Oregon in Sept for 12 weeks, doing a vintage at a winery just outside Portland, will probably pack my binos so can anyone tell what I might see, notwithstanding the light pollution problem.

Hi Joe,

It is a pity you aren't there in a week's time for the Oregon Star Party.

Even if you find a dark sky site, the first thing that will strike you coming
from the southern hemisphere is, comparatively, "where are all the stars?". :)
The richest parts of the Milky Way overhead at Australian latitudes is hard to beat.

But those openings through our own galaxy up north afford great views of deep sky
objects and in particular there are a host of big galaxies to enjoy.
M31 will be a great target in your binos for starters. A jewel in the crown is M52.
Try and find someone with some aperture that will show it to you.

Enjoy your trip.

Oregonians are an unusual people...

I got to know a few of them when I was in the Grand Tetons on vacation. It was pissing down rain, hard, fast and a lot of it...

They looked at me and said... "what's up with the drizzle?"
