Prompted by Mike's recent rendition of NGC 6302, and a beautiful clear sky, I captured just over 10 minutes of the Bug before the clouds materialised. Part way through processing the image, it was pelting down!
Nikon D7100 with ICNR
ISO 800
1 x 30 sec, 12 x 57 sec
14" ACF SCT
PixInsight & LR4
No darks, flats, bias or guiding.
I was planning to take about 20 minutes of lights, but got cut short. The 57 sec exposures are a result of an in-camera 3 second mirror/shutter delay setting in combination with the remote timer setting of 60 secs.
Set up time: 15 mins
Exposure time: 12 mins
ICNR time: 12 mins
Pack up time: 10 mins
Processing time: 60+ mins
Total time: ~2 hours

That's a cracker Chris!
Really like the colour, and quite a bit of detail too!
Cheers,
Justin.
That's great - and in only 10 minutes? Very nice, looks like a lot of O-III in there???
I obviously need more aperture!

That is a very cool version Chris  Interesting to see done with a Dslr also, pretty competitive in some ways ;)
Nice work

Stunning result, you captured this tiny object with your Nikon excellently!

Thanks Marc. The seeing was rather ordinary, so I think more detail is possible on a better night.
Thanks Rick.
Thanks Justin, the colour popped our quite well in PixInsight.
Thanks Lee. I am guessing that the blue is O-III; Mike's recent NB pic certainly had plenty. My camera is straight off the shelf, so no tricks.
Thanks Bob. I am still surprised what can be captured with the DSLR. Makes one think twice about future plans for a cooled astro camera.
Glad that you liked it Prokyon.
LUV the BUG !
I don't think I can get it with 9"25 :(

We should put all out bugs together and create a swarm :P
Pretty good result, it's one of the brightest PN's and doesn't seem to need much exposure to get something cool, which is good.

Great image Chris! I'm considering the Nikon D7100 as an upgrade to my current camera, do you think it is a good camera for astrophotography, obviously you have been able to capture some great results.
Cheers,
Jake

A great result.
BTW C-14's are excellent value, sublime long FL scopes that excel in capturing planets and planetaries (no diffraction spikes)
Nice one

Thanks Ian. I don't see why a 9.25" wouldn't capture it?
That is good - thanks Mark. The shorter the better with our weather.
Thanks Ross. The colours do stand out well against the dark sky.
Jake, I don't think that the D7100 or D7000 are anything special for AP, but they do both produce reasonable results for me (a beginner). I didn't buy them for AP, but decided to try them anyway, and they produce results that satisfy me for the present.
The long FL does have pros and cons. Appreciate your comments, Peter.
Thanks Paul. I would expect to get more detail in better seeing.
Chris
A 9.25 will eat it up.... I was imaging it with an 8" newt a few weeks back....
