No moon - check
no clouds - check
slip away from work early - check

Its been 2 months since I had a dark sky observing session and I have been suffering withdrawals :screwy: Time to do something about it!

I wanted to start early to catch the Leo and Virgo galaxies along with a few other northern targets before they dissapeared into the murk of the north west.

Started off with a galaxy tour of Leo, then armed with a few finder charts, found that strange and bizarre object, 3C273, (Thanks Rob).
Next onto a Virgo galaxy tour. Done :)

Time to try out the new baader OIII filter. I did a few comparisons between it and my lumicon uhc on m17, the bug nebula, lagoon and eta carina nebs.

THe OIII as expected showed a darker background and less stars. The contrast on eta carina was amazing, whilst on m8 and m17, the uhc gave the better view. The OIII was also good on the eight burst planetary neb, enabling internal structure to be seen. Overall the OIII did a good job and everything I expected of it.

Had a bit of a look around at a few old favourites, like the homunculus (showing great detail tonight), the hamburger and the sombrero galaxies.
Galaxy hunting was a bit hit and miss, with fog rolling in and then 10 minutes later, gone, then returning and going again.
Finally the fog went and it got really cold !

I had been entertaining thoughts of selling the 31mm nagler, but after taking in the milky way areas of sagitarius and carina again I think I have renewed my love of this eyepiece . Simply awesome views if you can get somewhere dark :)

Anyway, 3 hours of braving in the cold was enough for me as the fog had returned thicker than ever, so I packed it in after scraping the frost from the scope.

Hope your night was as good as mine :)

it was the only clear night Steve. You might have to wait for another few months ;)

I went up to a little observing spot I have just up the Hume Hwy. Seeing started of poor and by the time I left it was still about 7/10. I had a peek at jupiter through my 12" lightbridge and I must say I am impressed. This was the first time that I had looked at it high in the sky with my new scope and the detail was just amazing. There was heaps of detail between the main bands and even in them, and this was only at 170x. I had never seen such detail with my old 8". A quick star test revealed that my collimation was a bit of (probably due to the fact that I collimated before the mirror had cooled) so I can't imagine how good the view would be if it was spot on. The star test also revealed possible slight astigmatism, most likely a pinched secondary (The primary was removed and then replaced by Anthony at BINTEL so I'm sure the screws aren't to tight). Over all it was a great night even though we decieded to end it early at about 8pm due to the cold (Ice was forming on the car roof).

Well Dave it didnt seem anywhere near as cold as last night, and far less dewy. Hope your over your flu.

Had a ball with the 130mm newt
Panning the milky way with the 31mm nagler in was awesome, giving 21x mag and 3.9 degrees fov . Who needs binoculars :D
I saw the dark lanes and features as I never had before

Good one Geoff. I’m not too bad now thanks for asking.;)

By the way when you where panning with the 31 Nag, did you come across the
Dark Doodad? Nice object and would be interesting with the 31 Nag. :)

Greg Bryant mentioned it in his article in the June AS&T !

I have seen it many times but most people just fly by it!!!

The old Dark Doodad, in Musca. Most folks think your kidding when you show
them (well tell them) the Dark Doodad's name.

Would be a lovely object in a 31mm t5
