I want to heap some praise on the staff of Bankstown Hospital and R.P.A, as well as the ambulance service after suffering a heart attack on Tuesday night.
All concerned were thoroughly professional, skilled and carried out their tasks in a friendly and relaxing manner.
We hear so much bad about the public hospital system, but for emergency treatment, they are superb.

Hey Laurie, glad you are ok, I agree with you about the professionalism of medical staff. They really ought to be paid more for what they do. Its sad that our society pays hundreds of thousands a year to thugs to run around an oval kicking a ball about but the people that are there to save our lives are paid like second class citizens.

:( sorry to hear about this. But I totally agree. When the chips are down, our Health Service is top notch.
I hope you soon get on top of this set back. xo

I recently spent two weeks including 3 days in ICU in another hospital, Blacktown that always seems to get unwarrented criticism. I found them very professional and hard working. The meals were excellent. I even had my computer, Wifi and a wireless modem.
When I was in the ICU I told the nurse that I did not want a bed bath but would be happy to have a shower. She met my request and gave me a good scrub down under the shower. Lovelly! and she was a pretty good looker!

Thanks for your kind thoughts, everyone-they are much appreciated:)
Its amazing how hard these people work-I saw one nurse in Bankstown Hospital work at least 15 hours straight, and she was just as cheerful at the end-guess she must have been covering for someone else.
You are right, Matt-they definitely should be paid more money.
Larry
Great to see you on your metal and sharing the praise. Hope your recovery goes well.
She who controls the purse strings has had a couple of encounters with the emergency system in NSW in the last couple of years and as ex poms we cannot praise the system here highly enough irrespective of politics. Nursing is a vocation and the salary payers leverage that which is bad form.
Wishing you well

That is not nice to hear Laurie , hope you spring back from this fast mate . :D and keep up the good work here .
And yes Matt , there is definatly something wrong in the way wealth is being distributed in the world today , my X is a nurse and she works horrendous hours for a pittance , its disgusting :mad2: when sports stars (?? ) get millions , bu!!sh!t it is .

Sorry to hear that you had to call on the hospital system in this way. That said, you are in good hands.
+1 to the Blacktown hospital staff. They treated my elderly Mum a few years back in ICU - professional, considerate and above all understanding at a difficult time. Any pollie that recommends a pay rise for nurses has my vote

Hi Laurie,
Sorry to hear your unwell and happy to hear that they got to you quickly. :)
I know what you mean about public hospitals. When I had a very bad MVA in 1999, the public system in WA were brilliant, even right through the recovery period of 13 years. Had my last op at the beginning of this year. And again, they were brilliant, apart from one doctor, when I had a stroke two years ago.
Although we sometimes hear about the bad things that these hospitals do, we rarely hear about the many good things they do. I am alive (I actually stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated) only thanks to the efforts of the emergency personnel.
Slow and unwieldy the system may seem sometimes, but they are certainly there when you really need them. I have nothing but praise for all of them.
Hope you get better soon.
Cheers Peter :)

Could'nt agree more.
The state govt here can spend millions on upgrading a football field and
putting in "infrastucture" designed to funnel the crowd from the football
game over to the casino.
But they sack nurses and have ambulances queued up outside casuality departments and don't have enough hospital beds to meet demand.:screwy:
I was an RN in a previous life and left the profession to work as a rigger and scaffolder.
Made much better money and had less responsibility.

Sorry to hear your not well Laurie :(
I have never been to Bankstown hospital but I praise the Public Health System. I had my heart attack 4 years ago and I got nothing but the best of care from all who were looking after me. I had half a blocked artery and 2 clots in my heart. Everyone was so shocked I (was 28 at the time) had a heart attack.
And in march this year I got a blood clot in my arm and ended up in hospital and had to have surgery to remove it and again I got the best of care.
If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be here today.
Positive thoughts Laurie, hope you get better real soon :)

hope you get well soon Laurie:)
My experience with the system a couple of years back was one I try and forget, presented at my local hospital in actute pain and was scheduled to be moved to the local regional hospital some 25 kms away as the local one has long had its wards closed for budgetary reasons , the regional hospital though had 38 waiting admission that night so all halls and ambulances in the carpark were well full, moved there the next day , the ambos that moved me were bought in from a long way to deal with the overload , spent the afternoon in the back of the ambulance then the a@e then to a hallway and eventually sometime that night into an orthopedic ward as all the surgical beds were full, getting pain relief in the following days was at times very hard as the staff had to , while trying to do there job in the ward they were working in take my chart to the surgical ward to get the duty doctor there to authorise another shot of morphine , I can't stress how good the people are who were working in this situation and making it work the best they can , but wow they really shouldn't have to.

Thanks everyone for your concern and best wishes. Its nice to see others with positive experiences of the public health system too. I guess when we see first hand, the efficient and competent way the doctors, nurses and ambos handle their jobs, we have a much greater appreciation of the service they provide.:)

Laurie, glad to hear you are up and about so soon. Like everyone else here I can't praise hospital staff enough. I know I've mentioned this before but my sister is a RN so I hear about what they have to put up with and they do do a great job. However the funding to hospitals is far too little. Wollongong typically has 2-3 vacant beds in the whole hospital - they couldn't handle a minivan crash - and nurse to patient ratios in practice are never what they are in theory.
