Early last Thursday morning I headed to Yattalunga Wharf for some early-morning nightscapes. I’ve already posted the Yattalunga Star Trails from that morning – and here’s a couple of the images taken with my Canon 6D.

This first image is a 6-frame panorama, with the Milky Way setting in the West.

- Large 1 (http://www.mikesalway.com.au/download/461)

Each frame was captured at ISO3200, 20s exposure, f/2.8, 14mm with the Canon 6D.

This second one is a 4-frame vertical panorama, cropped square. Canon 6D, 24mm @ f/2.8, 15s exposures @ ISO3200.

- Large 2 (http://www.mikesalway.com.au/download/462)

Everything is much harder in light pollution! It affects both capture and processing. During capture, I had to use shorter exposures with a lower ISO than normal. During processing, I couldn’t “push” the image as far as normal, otherwise it just highlights the light pollution even more. Colour balance is also much trickier.

Makes me want to get out under dark skies again very soon!

Still, I’m happy with this result – was nice to be out under the stars even if just for an hour or two before work!

Both taken with the Nikon 14-24!

Thanks for looking!

Nice composition, Mike ! Have you tried to remove the gradients ? Given the amount of light pollution on the image, I guess it might be tricky.

Great Work as always Mike. Even in the light pollution, you still managed to get a lot of nice detail in the sky. I think you have a good balance between the sky and the well lite foreground.

love the 1st one. can't do anything about the LP, but it works in this image making a balanced one with the looming MW above. :)

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I liked the different tone and colour in the MW in this one.

Antu - i'll give some gradient removal a go.
