We were nearing the end of our trip around the Kimberley, and on the second last day on our way back to Broome, we stopped at Windjana Gorge.

Windjana Gorge is part of a 375 million-year-old Devonian reef system carved by the Lennard River. The area is prominent for the Bunuba people of the Kimberly region. In the 1890s, the Bunuba man Jandamarra, a former stockman, led an armed insurrection. In late 1894, a posse of 30 or so heavily armed police and settlers attacked Jandamarra and his followers in Windjana Gorge. Jandamarra was wounded but escaped.

This is a panorama of 10 photos stitched using Microsoft ICE. I left the photographers in there (bottom right) to show scale.

There were a lot of fresh water crocs cruising around in the river but they weren’t really interested in us.

It’s hard to picture the size of these rocks walls, but look along the edge of the sand near the yellow grass and you’ll spot 2 people. Then you can imagine the scale :)

This is a 6 image panorama, Canon 5D Mk 2, 24-105mm lens @ 55mm, f/9, ISO125, 1/250s exposures.

Thanks for looking.

Mike,

I love the colours in the first image, just beautiful. As an aside, I don't suppose you saw any fish plates (black fish scales) in the rocks at all? Of all the geological periods I quite like the Devonian and the fossils associated with them...

Once again, lovely pictures and thanks for sharing...

Cheers,
Mario

Dang you Mike - you give me ichy feet! The colours and patterns in the limestone are exquisite. Beautiful shots.

If you walk through the gorge to the north side and then turn right there is a cave with art work a few 100 meters along. They used to let tourists go there - advertised it - but these days I don't know. There are so many idiots about they close these sorts of places down to stop the "Fred Blogs wuz here 2013" type graffiti.

Fabulous colours Mike!

I remember the freshies were cheek by jowl along the water's edge at times.
You certainly wouldn't want to test their demenor too much by kicking sand in their faces.
