Anyone from Townsville?

Might be moving to Townsville at the end of the year for a new work position, and wanted to know things like best / safest suburbs, renting (temporarily), public transport etc.

Appreciate any help.

Hey Gruffalo,

There are a few from Townsville here. I spent 12 years in Townsville and know it fairly well.

The best suburbs are Annandale, Douglas, Idalia and Fairfield Waters.

I wouldn't personally live in Wulguru, Oonoonba or Kelso/Rassmussen. I've delivered pizzas to basically all of Townsville and the Annandale, Douglas, Idalia and Fairfield are the 4 best suburbs in terms of both people and public transport.

Douglas is right near the University, so lots of uni students hanging around. Annandale is still fairly close to the University, but runs parallel to the army barracks in front of Mt Stuart. Idalia and Fairfield are a little closer to the CBD.

Do you know where abouts you're working? Is it in the CBD? The industrial area (Garbutt?).

Public transport is fairly terrible. I tried relying on it to get to work/uni and it is very unreliable. If I was in your position I'd buy a bicycle and ride to work. There are some nice bike paths all over Townsville that'll get you anywhere. If this doesn't appeal, and you don't have a vehicle, I'd say get a cheap mini motorbike/scooter. Public transport isn't really an option for reliable travel (although it may have gotten better in the 12 months I've been in Mackay).
